Cerbera power?
Discussion
You're designing a stage 1 upgrade for us huh?
If you do it, you got my order! Make me hit a 100mph in 5secs...!!!
Engine isnt really that torquey, a top V8 performer but not in the league of the americans.... but what she does have is very fast revving, so as long as the weight is good, she'll cut through the air..... she reaches the optimum power band in a flick.... and stays there on perfectly timed clutch tearing gear changes....
PTW is the key....
Theres loads of info in here, just do a search and you'll find plenty of techy stuff.... it just gets a tad little boring when the performance/power questions keep coming up....

Nope, not unless you want an ls1 transplant
I'm interested in comparing the engines, ls1 v cerb or ls6 or ls2 but I need to know realistically what the cerb makes in the first place. Thanks.

I think the AJP weighs about 140Kg, very light for V8.

SXS, you have mail.
Simon, good link, thank you. Quite interesting reading. Is this a typical car or modded engine? The cerb likes to rev and must sound wonderful at full chat!
Just for comparison a mildly hopped ls1 is making 360lbs at 3000 rpm and over 300 lbs/ft torque at 2k. Torque peaks at 392 lbs at 5000 rpm
On the top end the ls1 is making 400 hp at 5,800 and 392hp at 6200 rpm. The cerb in the graph is making appx 385 hp at 7100.
The cerb engine weights are interesting, is 140kg about 308lbs? LS1 weighs in at just under 400 lbs.
So which will be quickest, a cerb or the TSO? The TSO has the power and mega-grunt but a slightly heavier engine and 6 gears. Anybody got the weight of a cerb?

As has been said many times before... Most standard 4.5s have been between 330 and 350bhp, with around 300 to 330lbft. A few have been under 300bhp, but haven't seen any standard over 350 on a well known dyno. After Red Rose mods, mine made 398bhp @7200 and 350lbft - with the alternate 98 map. Only ran it on 95 fuel once and it was nasty.
SXS - you talk about "lemon" engines from the factory and imply yours is better. I'd say the factory are well aware of what the expected power is, and a lemon would be a sub 330 one. And competition ignition leads are going to make sod all difference assuming they weren't knackered in the first place!

Dannylt, what the hell you on about? If you think all non-lemon cerberas produce around 330-350break, you keep believing that...
What I DO know, is when the right foot hits the floor, theres a hell of a lot more umph in the current one than my past ownerships, and others I've had the chance of blasting.
I've never made any claims on power output figures, if anything its a combination of good-tuning/traction/and more breathing power that does the job.... and I've got that area pretty sorted... and I feel the freakin difference in a major way, and she was running very sweet before any of the jobs.
And when did I say my coil and leads made all the difference? You read my profile and put words into my mouth? Blow air in the other direction!

On the other hand, the low down torque of the LS1 could be good for drivability.
Interesting. I always think of it the other way round. For instance, if I'm "on the go" I know that the power/torque is further up the rev range, and can keep the needle there using gears. If I'm beetling around town, or if the surface is slippery I know that if I keep the revs low then there's a bit more room for error and correction, rather than getting treated to all the torque at 2k revs.

Interested in the idea of an LS1 transplant, but wonder if it would be cheaper than just rebuilding a TVR engine that had gone wrong (assuming thats the motivation for doing it).

Any idea of costs?
I can't quote because there are so many variables, you can call me though via my profile
I'd build a custom engine, internal trigger, DTA ecu etc (with traction control etc. Of interest though what will the tvr cost to rebuild? As for the torque issue, over 300lbs at 2000rpm and nearly 400 through most of the mid and upper ranges is well worth having.
Whatever, I know just what you mean but with these engine's the torque is there, all the time. All you do is press the loud pedal.

SXS said:Huh? Aren't you contradicting yourself here? So, how many Cerbies have you seen on a dyno? Let me guess - none. But if it makes you feel better to imagine yours is better, that's great. Impressions of power are more to do with the delivery anyway - cars with flat torque curves feel slow.
