Which Disco for under 10k
Discussion
We have just got a Honda CR-V to acxomodate the areival of our 3rd child.
This foray into suv's and 3 kids has got me looking at Discovery's in whole new light.
Seeing a family (mother, father, 2 grandparents and two boys) turn up at Lydden hill, pop down the tailgate to make a bench and then pull out a fridge, barbecue and associated goodies really impressed me and I can see this being our future family bus.
I was just wondering what is the best one to buy if I wanted to spend 10k or less. I would be happy to run a V8 on lpg and must be auto. We do less than 10k miles a year and I would go offroading a little bit if I ha one.

I would try to find a Discovery 2 with a TD5, manual gearbox over an early Disco 3.
Their prices have strengthened over the past year, but you should find a great vehicle for around 10k
Amazing off road, and quite nimble on road, mine was!
If you want a bit more power have a chip and bigger intercooler fitted, but watch for warped exhaust manifolds!

Must be auto as wide only drives that and I prefer auto for the family bus.
Just lpoked up the different versions- wouldn't want a 2, definitely has to be a 3 for me. The 2 just looks and feels a massive step back in time for me when spending that amount of money.
Sounds shallow I know!

Having had a Disco 2 for some years and use of a disco 3 whilst my old RRS/SC was in for its many warrenty repairs, I'd say you are right to want a 3 they are lightyears ahead in terms of tech /comfort everything. Though that may also include costs to repair. However if you want to bash it about in an offroad site/green lane then the 2 is probably a cheaper bet.
Ps I like the disco 2 but it is of its time ie only a facelift/moderate update of the Disco 1.

As its the family bus I doubt I would get to do some real bashing about like it was designed for.
Its a bonus but what I like is the wide rear bench, extra seats in rear, high roofline and airy interior - just looks a grate place to travel in.
Was down at Lydenn again today and yet another disco parked up next to me and made the interior of our cr-v seem pokey! It had a levels ran leather interior that lifted the interior.

I have an early 54 plate D3 TDV6 S model. It really is an excellent family bus and this summer will be taking the 4 of us + 2 dogs down to S France. In daily use it is excellent & swallows all our kit with ease. Spec-wise, the S is not too bad and just lacks leather & the sat nav which if we're being honest, is pretty dated now anyway! I have privacy glass, premium stereo, heated seats & screen, rear parking sensors, Xenon headlights, climate control etc etc.
For your budget I would say it is possible although Autos are more expensive than manuals by up to £1k!
