Hi all,
Does anybody have any experience of getting their car resprayed. I have seem so many cars with bad resprays it does worry me. But I'm looking at a 350i that might need one.
If anyone has had a wedge resprayed could give me an idea of price, and how the results were I would be grateful.
Thanks
David

Your looking about the £1000 mark. Where are you located ? try the classic car mags for places that spray classics if you dont have anywhere you have used before. Try to stay away from maindealer (regardless of Marque) bodyshops as these usually up to charge the most and get yoru car dont in super quick time .. not necessarily the best quality work

Thinking more about it ... get the yellow pages etc, or speak to neighbours etc.
Go along to any prospective places ... ask to have a look around (dont take it on face value, some places look like shit, but the quality of work can be second to none!)
Ask have they worked with fibreglass before ? tell them you are looking for a quote, and are looking for a good job. Dont take any shit, colours can be matched (chipped) to perfection. mismatches can be blown in to panels too. The biggest problem yoru choisen bodyshop will have is silicone contamination ( over waxing of the car!) not a bad thing to us owners who love shiney cars... but a pain in the arse to get paint to stick to. If you find somewhere, take the speedo reading, and put some tipex on the speedo cable connectors, note the fuel in the tank. Allow some mileage if the car needs to be moved, or a colour match obtained from the local paint suppliers ( ask where they get their paint from to work out aprox mileage ). its all common sence really. Also, water based paints are in use my the big body shops, but hell, if you drive a V8 you dont give a rats ass for the environment, so ask about Cellulose ( it is still available in smaller outfits) or accept a decent 2k (2pac) lacqure.

Hope this helps

I'm in south east London, but I don't mind travelling if I know it will be a good job. I figure there is no point in being half-assed about it. Also I will need new decals, and badges, preferably that they will fit. I have asked for a quote at a place near Bristol www.tvrbodyshop.co.uk/ . They look pretty good, but also expensive. However if they can do the decals I would be tempted. There is an example of a white 350i that they've done, and that appears to have all the decals (I guess they are decals aren't they).

Make sure the people you are going to use have experience in spraying GRP. I had my car resprayed by a garage that did some good body repairs on previous cars but they managed to mess up the job on my wedge. After some haggling they agreed to do the job again after I was able to prove they used the wrong primer. The finished job though looked brilliant so it was worth it in the end.

hi, i had a quote from wedge automotive about a year or so back, they remove all the bits that come off (sills, wing mirrors, boot, bonnet etc.) fill any screw holes with matting after grinding them out (not filler that will crack quickly lick most places use, repair any crazing ( not major damage like in accidents) then spray the whole lot in 2 pack paint (about £60 a litre)this all costs about £1000 + vat best get a quote though, the work they did looked bloody good, they told me that they have their own people spraying who specialise in fiber glass, because metal body shops forget about the crazing problems.

The white tvr you mention belongs to one of our regions members, he was extremely happy with the work carried out by the tvrbodyshop (car looks stunning) and the price, they come with his recommendation.

Had my old Tasmin resprayed by a guy who specialises in motorcycle bodywork and crash hat murals etc., so he was au fait with GRP. All of the removable bits were removed, all the cracks, chips, scrapes and scuffs dealt with, then a dozen coats of paint (to get the depth - pearlescent is very thin!) and a few of lacquer were added.
I believe the car is now for sale as a stripped shell ready for the Tas Challenge; at the point I sold it last August, there was no reappearance of any of the previous damage.
Cost me GBP800 plus I stripped and reassembled all the bits.

Broadside:
It was Cleveland Bikespray (inspirational title!) in Thornaby. Glen is the man to talk to; alas at the mo (Sun afty) I'm in Leicester so I don't have his number handy. Just recovering from an 800+ mile jaunt from northern Denmark to here via the Channel Tunnel (and a van full of booze!) but will be at home this evening; if you can't find Glen's number post something here and I'll dig it out for you.
