I've been driving for 41 years and today I turned the wrong way onto the M25 and drove 20 miles in the wrong direction (East instead of West) before I realised it. This was at junction 9 which, IMHO, is a bit confusing the first time. I only noticed when the M25 became the M26.

I can see myself soon becoming like one of those old guys who drives around the M25 for two days wondering where he is.......

Has anybody else done something similar or is it just me?

Edited for clarity!!!

You didn't notice you were the only one going in your direction and there were 3 lanes travelling pretty rapidly in the other? For 20 miles?

I think he meant direction, rather than the wrong lane.

No. No - I mean the direction other than that which I meant to go!! i.e. East instead of West. But of course you knew that....

Didn't he mean that he went in the wrong direction compared with where he wanted to go (For example Northbound instead of Southbound) whether or not he was facing other traffic.

I think he means he was going in the wrong direction to his chosen destination, not against traffic on the wrong side of the road as that would be truly and utterly stupid.

I don't think he meant driving at oncoming traffic... I hope.

Like others have said, could be worse, you could have driven the wrong way down the carriageway. Reminds me of a joke I heard once:

Wife rings her Volvo driving husband :"look out dear, there's an idiot going the wrong way down a motorway"
Volvo Driver: It's worse than that dear, there's loads of them!
