Well folks, I have started stripping the car down. I am doing a full nut and bolt rebuild on the car and will be picking peoples brains for suppliers on the following:
Hood restoration, new carpets, leather trimmers, wheel restoration, engine bay hoses, radiator re-cores, new steering rack, steering rack bushes in poly or aluminium, trailing arm bushes in poly, poly ARB bushes and lots more.

I wish you the best of luck mate. It's something a lot of people daydream about(myself included) but few get round to doing!

Remember not to get disheartened during the rebuild, as in my experience things always take longer and cost more than initial estimates would suggest. Perseverance will bring the desired result I'm sure. That's what I keep telling myself about my Vitesse restoration anyway

I can't offer much in the way of specialist recommendations, other than for the alloys, which I had done at Gillingham in Kent for 140 quid at a place called 'Lepsons'. I was chuffed with the job they did.

ATB, chin up.

Hood - John Taylor in Larkfield (emailed you that one)
New Carpets - ????
Leather trimmers - Possibly John Taylor ...
Wheel restorations - Lepsons at Gillingham definitely the best !!
Engine Bay hoses - See other thread....
Radiator re-core - Serk's or Tower View do exchange units
Steering racks - Tower View can supply re-conned exchange units.
Poly Bushes - I have a friend who can supply the front suspension arm bushes. Got my polt Trailing arm bushes from Tower View/Superflex plus ARB mounts aswell.

Petrol is available from Shell and Oil from Halfords ..... We've practically solved it all here. All the best Jas, give us a shout when you need some muscle.

Cheers

Mark

Good luck with the rebuild.

Rim-tech in Dartford are very good with wheels, not cheap at around 40 a wheel but fitted tyres for a friend who had his done there and they looked like new, also do the wheels for my friends concourse cars.

Jas,

I found it cheaper and much better to buy secondhand Chimera seats than have mine refurbished - John charges over £600 for refurb as opposed to sub £200 for a s/h pair of Chimera seats which are much more comfortable - the foam will have more life in it too!

For carpets there is a place which advertises in the back of Sprint, based in Wellingborough, it is about £600 for a set - you may find it cheaper to buy a roll (from the same guy) and have the carpets taylored - that's what I did.

Good luck,

Steve.

A quick update, the body is now off the chassis and surprise, surprise the outriggers on both sides are totally knackered despite looking fine from underneath the car! Looks like a supply of 38mm CDS is required!

have stripped all the front and rear suspension back to the core and put it all back together again. all the stearing off as well. new brake line runs fitted with stainlees braided hoses etc etc.

if you need any help on these fronts let me know.

one bit of advice, sand blast everything, it never fails to impress me how clean it comes back. get this done by a pro.

good luck.

Gadgit,

Why have you replaced the brake lines with stainless braided? I know others have done this in the past as well but what is the reason?
Copper brake pipe doesn't expand under hydraulic pressure so I know the reason isn't to give a better pedal feel.
It makes sense to replace the original rubber reinforced lines from the copper pipe to the caliper with braided SS but why the copper lines?.

Brake lines.

I replaced the run from the caliper to the chassis where the junction is. This area during restoration is a problem as all the joints were badly corroded and there are two stupid twisted runs of copper up and over to the caliper. I priced up the replacement flexible hoses and found it cheaper to replace that section in one. Its only 18 inch long and is much neater looking. the only problem will be to remove the caliper you have to undo the braided hose at the joint on the edge of the chassis, but due to its leanth is is quite easey. you can see pictures of the brake run and others of my car on http://community.webshots.com/user/gadgit101

click on tvrs2

good luck.

Brake lines.

I did the same as Gadgit. Does improve the braking. One small thing I found was the the bracket to holf the old rubber and copper bits on the back of the hub is adaptable to take the new braided line without having to cut a slot in it.

All you have to do is open the hole out by drill large enough to accept the new lines and then sleev the lines as Gadgit has done with the old coil round sleeving.

Cheers

Total restoration has ceased.
The wife is knocked up, so I can't restore my beloved S2 now as I can't juggle that many balls! It was a hard choice to make between selling the TVR or stop racing and since there is no way I can stop racing, the S2 has to go.
I've put an ad in PH classified so if anyone wants a crack at it give me a call.
It will be a sad moment to see the car go but probably the correct decision. (I hope).
I may get another TVR one day, but it will be a hard act to follow my old S2 which was more reliable than some of my past company cars!
