Dropping the Diff for cleaning/painting next week
Discussion
Guys,
Is it possible to get the Diff out without dismantling all of the rear suspension? The bible suggests that it's not but i think that by undoing the trailing arm set up I should be able to wiggle the half-shaft's off the diff... Also how do you determine if the diff is LSD or not so I don't use the wrong oil? Having looked at the rear bushes previously they look fine so I'd rather not take them to bits as they were a pain to put back together
Figure that since I have all new brakes calipers, disks, pads and brake pipes it would be a crime of laziness not to drop and clean/paint the diff etc while I'm doing it, I'm not starting it until Monday so plenty of time for opinions to be voiced
Cheers,
Rich

Jack the car up so that both rear wheels clear of the gound. Place wedges under front wheels, take out of gaer and with brakes off rotate either rear wheel. If both wheels rotate the same amount (1 turn for 1 turn), it's got an LSD.
LSD was not standard on a 280i (assuming you're talking about the car in your profile). There would usually be a tag on bolted to the diff somewhere with the ratio, and if LSD would say Powrlok (sp?). Or you could raise the rear off the ground, and spin the one wheel by hand - if the opposite side doesn't turn in the same direction, it's non-LSD. Also worth checking the chassis for cracks in the area around the diff - not that uncommon.
Hmmm, I think you may get away with it but you'd possibly have to disconnect the tie-rods from the A-frames as well to avoid stressing the bushes as you 'wiggle' the bits around.
I've got my diff on the bench at the mo, see my thread "I'm getting too old..." for clues to where you may have trouble:

Hope your bushes are OK as they seem to be completely unobtainable in original spec. now. Make sure you catch any packing shims that may be fitted wither side of the brake discs; they set the brake disc centreline and the camber angle of the wheels. Mine has something like 15 shims one side and none the other, typical TVR eh...
As said, the quick way to find out if it's a PowrLok LSD is to look for the metal tag embossed with PL, retained by oone of the rear cover bolts (there's usually another with the diff. ratio on, too). Extremely unlikely on a 280i but you never know...
