Is this supposed to be here? 6 speed install questions.

Hi all

Just got my 6 speed box back from Bernie at CTS. I noticed that it has a large weight or something on the shifter mounting tower (Not sure on the technical term!). I notice that the 3R and the m400 dont have this part. Here is a photo (to the left of the red arrow, next to the clutch line )



Do i need to remove this and install another bit? I also will have the M400 shifter kit so will be fitting all at once.

Do i need a new speedo sensor?

Where have people mounted their gearbox oil pumps? I was thinking of putting it on the gearbox if there is room

It looks like the reversing light switch to me....

The pump would get very hot if you manage to mount it to the gearbox..
I personally would put it somewhere not as hot and with less vibration...

sometimes manufacturers add a weight to the gearshift assembly to improve the feel of the gear change

a simple mod to improve a gearshift is to add a weight

does the weight look like it can be removed ? might be worth leaving it there and removing it later.

Steve. I am not referring to the reverse switch, but the large weight on the gear selector tower.(only photo i could find on the net).
You can remove it but it would mean having to replace one of the balljoints that the rods connect to.

I thought mounting the pump away from the gearbox would be best. Will put it with the fuel pump and filter etc

It is a common upgrade on a old Mk1 or mk2 Golf GTi to fit the big shift weight from a Mk3 Golf GTi (just a solid piece of steel attached to the usual setup). I`ve done it a few times and it just gives the shifter extra momentum once you start to shift. Keep it if you can

Ah ok the arrow is pointing to the switch!
The extra weight may be of benefit but they are not on the 6 speed Noble mechanism.
Ball joints and rods are not expensive and we changed ours when upgrading to the quicker shifter.
Extra weighted gear knobs have been used so seems to do the same thing...

You may find its in the way of the cables exiting the tunnel..

Yes you need the front hub mounted sensor and trigger wheel...

I will try and hunt for the standard Noble Shifter. I had a moment earlier thinking that i had just spent lots of money on the wrong box!


Surprised to hear that you need a new speedo sensor, especially if it runs off the front wheel? Any idea why you need to replace it?

The gearbox weight is cut off and add the weight to the gear lever itself if you feel it needs it.

If your speedo is already driven off the front hub then no change reqd is there ?
If your speedo was previously driven from a 5 speed gearbox then changing to a 6 speed you wont
have the speedo drive in the gearbox any more so you will have to go down the front hub route,and I suspect the hub sensor and trigger wheel will not be there...

Thanks for that. I had assumed (wrongly) that the 5 speed was also driven from the front wheel.

Andy, After looking through the manual thats what i suspected. It really is a big job changing to 6 speed.
