As i do a lot of driving on A roads with lots of overtaking Opportunities i comment to my passenger that its never the posh/nice/powerful cars that try to race at traffic lights or seem to want to get past you at every opportunity.I'm talking about prestige high end BMW'S & MERCS etc....Is it because they have nothing to prove and they know that their car is faster than the usual 1.3 litre bog standard car?.

In general expensive luxury cars tend to be owned by more mature drivers (both mentally and in age). That said I quite amazed you've yet to encounter an aggressive driver in an Audi wink

I will happily use all 516hp.

Id say a lot is down to the fact only older more well off people tend to buy the prestigious models, and sometimes not because they want the performance, but because of the badge. My old man a prime example - owns some nice kit, drives like an old fart.

I don't really consider Audi's as an expensive luxury car really.

But you do consider a Mercedes or a BMW to be? Why?

I think big barges such as the Merc S-Class's & BMW 7 Series encourage a much more relaxed driving style thanks to automatic gearboxes and massage seats etc.
Also, as mentioned, these cars do attract the more mature, less testosterone-charged driver I reckon.

To be fair the typical tailgating, outside lane hogging pillock in an Audi will more likely be driving a diesel A4 which I suppose aren't particularly 'luxury' cars by modern standards.

I was just querying the generalisation, as Mercedes and BMW have low end models, just like Audi has the A8, R8, etc. It's not wrong I guess, as it's just one person's opinion and confirms that an A8 is a more subtle large barge than the other more obvious choices. I'm obviously feeling a little over-sensitive today! hehe

It isnt allways the main driver driving it, my wife isnt a slow driver but she doesnt tend to extract the full performance, changes up too early and just doesnt want to go that fast, the car has enough power at x revs to do what she needs, another 200 bhp wouldnt get used. The one time she did "race" was going it from the lights against a Boxster in her Volvo T5, she enjoyed having the power but didnt feel the need to make a point every time.

Sometimes as has been said, sometimes people just buy cars as they are available off a friend or family member, my mum nearly had my 250 bhp Saab, ended up with an automatic MG ZT diesel.

Yep, been over taken lots of times in the 'Stang, I care not. (the funny ones are people that over take me in 20/30/40 zones because I am sticking to the posted limit)

I always obey the limit on the roads (even if it is ludicrously low in places) my hot hatch turbo nutter days are well behind me and I have nothing to try and prove anymore (as well as a stern telling of from the BiB which thankfully was just that with no points/ban as a result of being stopped).

I know how fast my car is and what it is capable of, and how much it can bite if you over step the mark. If somebody comments that it is slow (because I generally do just potter around on the roads with it), my answer is always "Slow?, I'll see you at York Raceway for a drag race then" strangely they never say "yeah ok", wonder why wink

So from what I am like I would imagine that they too have nothing to prove and really don't give a damn smile

I just consider Audi's the same as vw's and skoda's.I don't dislike them but i would'nt put a Jaguar in the same class.

I think this is a big part of it. I drive my 540 like Miss Daisy, but drive with a lot more urgency in the wife's Swift.

I do when it comes to the lower end models, but I would think an A8 is most certainly a luxury car to most people.

But the problem is it now looks like every other A4, A6, big BMWs and Mercedes have a bit more road presence.

Most nice cars are driven carefully. Seen a lot of repmobiles getting abused and driven improperly though. Audi, BMW and Mercs all have their repmobiles to be honest. I seem to have noticed a lot of Merc repmobiles floating about lalte.y

I think it's rare to see any cars being driven anything other than normally.

I shared 50 miles of motorway with an Aston DB9 before, I was on cruise doing 65-70, he was doing about the same. Fair play to them, you don't have to drive to the limit all the time.

Really? Might just be due to the sheer numbers of them on the road, but I see a LOT of very badly driven Picasso's and Zafira's, either red faced angry dad, or dopey witless mum, both dangerous in their own ways.

Speaking of 'nice cars' driven badly, a tt in a new Bentley convertible sped up once as I tried to overtake. The thinking of someone with a £200k? car having to prove his car is better than a £10k 4x4 is odd to me. Still caught him up and overtook though.
