Should have the gear box out of my 4.3 tomorrow.
It's had a issue going into 5th gear which has been on going for the previous two owners so I have decided to sort it once and for all, gear box is out then it will be a decision to either re-furb, replace all bushes etc.. And refit or just replace the box. The later is my preferred option at the moment as I feel alot has already been tried with regards to the problem.
Anyway I am having a look underneath and wondering what other jobs could be done with the additional access I now have.
I am replacing the sump gasket and changing the oil and filter which should sort the oil leak.
Anything else that's worth doing?

Thanks
Tony

Fuel lines (2 x flexible hoses) flow and return from the injection fuel rail at the rear of the engine for specs see my post on here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

mounts complete for an easy lift out.

Remove plenum and trumpets to get to top bellhousing bolts, (a swivel ratchet is your pal here).

Use long 1/2" extensions from the back of the box to release the outer bellhousing bolts.

Outherwise, a piece of cake.

Good luck.

Thanks Simon, I'll will have a look for those in the morning, just been reading your other thread looks very useful.

Mike, I managed to get the top bell house bolts off from underneath. Have the rear mount all undone and currently supported at the back, the bell houses bolts are all off. In the morning one of my friends is coming over to help getting the thing out, any tips for removal would be appreciated, I'm pretty sure everything that needs removing has been I'm intending on dropping the bell house then undoing the gearbox bolts and removing them seperate.

My main concern is the weight of it, it feels like the engine end is going to take a fair tug and twist to remove it from the engine.
Is it just a case of supporting the rear and man handling the front until it frees itself?

Replace gear box mounting rubbers,
Grease propshaft,
Replace slave cylinder,
Carefully inspect clutch release arm for wear and signs of the push rod pushing through the release arm.
Grease gear linkage mechanism.
Good luck

gloves.....i dropped the box out of the bottom of my car, and was very glad id put on a decent pair of heavy gloves, as the box dropped an inch, trapping my fingers between the chassis and box.

no damage done, but it would jhave been bloody were it not for those

Well that's a great big pain in the arse!!!!!
Managed to get the box droped had real fun with the mount at the back took a good hour to get that off.
Now I'm left with the box hanging down still connected to the bell house but out of the engine.
Having a issue removing the bolts from within the bell house to remove the box.
I have ended by saturating them in fluid to help unlock them.
The issue is I can just about get a socket on them but 1:they are very tight. And 2: when I put pressure on tem the whole box moves as well.
Any tips?

Its an LT77 Peter.

I remember the box to bellhousing bolts were very tight on mine. Just a case of keep at it mate, they will come undone. Is there no way you can wedge the box to stop it spinning.

I got to this point a couple of times yesterday!! I'm actually considering getting a "proper man" to put it all back in!

Bit of an update, still the box is attached to the bell house.
Those bolts are very very tight!!!!! I've already managed to snap one.
Waiting for a 1/2 inch socket to get my biggest breaker bar on them.
Got the whole thing supported now so I'm sure it's just the tightness of the bolts rather than the position of the box etc...
I have used near on a whole can of release fluid on them already!
Can't see a way that the bell house and gearbox can be removed together so I will continue with my efforts.
