Hi
another job on the list; the steering column seems to vibrate at speed or over bumps, is this a known issue as my past wedges have done it too and how do i fix it? I'm not sure if there's a bush thats needs replacing inside or if its how the whole column is mounted to the inside of the car ?

Hi Mate..If its a V8 then some people have replaced the bulkhead bush with an upgraded bush..Im sure someone will point you in the right direction...If you are getting vibration through the steering it could also be another factor..Suspension..Any of the front end bushes or if its noisy then it could be a wheel bearing..Cheers...Ziga

Well I could certainly bang some holes in alloy plate and turn up spacer bushes if required... but don't you lot have mates with lathes and stuff?

Unfortunately not..
I thought from the previous post that it was something that you produced and sold, but if you could make one i would obviously pay?

Ian..I know you are busy with work but you are a good engineer and what with the switchgear..Heater controls and any other bits you can make you could have some serious pocket money..As long as you price it right and not under price your work which you have a habit of doing..I too dont know anyone personally who can engineer to the same standard as yourself..When i paid you for the indicator stalks at the fest i knew you would do what you did but in honesty i would pay that all day long!!..Custom made quality parts are not cheap..You are also a decent fella..Im sure im not the only one who can stand there and say that..Cheers...Ziga

OK, OK, enough with the bum-licking hehe
Let me refresh my memory on how I did my 390 and I'll get back to you. Can I take it that you all have the SD1 steering column or is there a Triformaznisslexrollsmini version that I don't know about? biggrin
Main lights switch on the left, dash lights dimmer on the right, long spindly switches, that sort of thing?

Right, bearings are in stock locally to me, I still haven't been under the car to check (it's bit difficult as the rear end is two feet in the air on axle stands)...

This is the best 'mod' I've made to the Wedge.

I fitted that lower bearing on my 2.8 wedge, and it made a *HUGE* improvement. Steering was very heavy at low speeds (no PS), rattled column over bumps, and sometimes felt a bit vague.

Original plastic bush was well worn and oval, and column shaft could be moved at least 1/4 inch side to side....

With the new bush, steering is a lot lighter at low speeds, rattles gone, and response feels much sharper.

Just do it as per URL - it's far better ...

It took me about a year to fix a very similar problem.
I checked all the suspension and steering, had the wheels balances several times but could not get rid of a very annoying shimmy on the front end.
Finally, I took the wheels back to be balanced and watched whist they did the job.
Both front wheels were slightly oval. No amount of balancing would ever get them to rotate true.
The car doesn't have to be in an accident - hit the curb hard or do something stupid whilst parking. I've even heard of it happening to vehicles that have been stood for a long time.
I now have two refurbished alloy wheels and everything is once again calm.
If you have no luck trying everything else, look at this.

I got an upgraded steering column bearing and housing from TVR Car Parts (now David Gerald). It's supposed to be for a TVR S Series and is made of alloy with a proper metal bearing instead of the rubbish platic one. It also has the triangular centre piece to fit the later triangular Ford Granada steering column. I just needed to enlarge the hold in the bulkhead a bit with a flap wheel and drill some new holes for the bolts. Job done and a big improvement. It was about £20ish I think.
