Going Shimergo (Shimagnolo?)

Have read quite a bit recently about inter-brand compatability... seems loads of cyclo cross guys (typically) run Shimano 8 speed cassettes and rear mech with Campag 10 speed ergo levers. Advantages seem to be less mud clogging, greater durability, less weight, and cheaper cost/serviceability of the levers.

Wisdom seems to be that, by a fluke, the pull ratio on the campag levers equates to the movement needed by a shimano mech to index correctly (seemingly, 9 speed can be achieved too by clamping the cable differently at the mech.

For all sorts of reasons, it would suit me greatly to try this approach on my Harry Quinn rebuild but before I invest is some new Ergos, just wondering if anyone in PH land has any experience of whether it really does work as claimed.

I had originally intended to try and migrate entirely to Campag for this bike (it has always been Shimano), but I don't like the correct period Campag levers (my hands don't fit them well), and it's not straight forward to get the wheel set I'm on to accept 9/10/11 speed Campag cassettes.

That's the point, I haven't thought about it in that much detail. Was hoping someone else had!

Ok, can certainly confirm that veloce 10 sp levers certainly do index with 8sp shimano derailleurs... Now, anyone know what the black finish is that campag use? Hard as hell to remove!

Totally through ignorance i've got a Dura Ace 7402 8 speed rear derailieur - shimano r400 down tube 8 speed shifters and a campagnolo 8 speed casette and it works a treat - tried using to use a rear wheel with a 7 speed casette and it wont set up??
