Barely a day goes by that I don't see one. It's becoming the new Gaffer taped Mondeo bumper.
Obviously a weak point but the drivers just seem oblivious.
Does it not make a sound from inside the cabin? I find it hard to believe given that from the outside it can be heard a street away...

My old Eunos had an undertray that hung down a bit. It was replaced a few years prior to me purchasing it, from MX5Parts, but looked like it had been snapped at one corner. At one point, on my way to taking it on the track at Japfest, I was driving my car along the pavement and heard a horrible scraping noise, and everyone was looking at me. After panicking that something had fallen off the car, I found it was the undertray, so ripped the thing off. All it was good for was catching oil spillage really..

Couldn't say, the undertray formerly attached to my Audi went missing years ago.

I can't imagine how the one on our Octavia could ever fall off - it's got a stupidly large number of bolts holding it on.

This.

The one on my Bora has exactly 15 MILLION torx head screws holding it on.

Driving up the hill towards my house and I notice the same undertray as mine on the side of the road, so thought I'd pick it up as a spare.

Wasn't a spare, it was in fact mine. It was ripped off when the OH was driving it. And yep, she didnt even notice!

The bolts seize, then the chap servicing it snaps the heads off, can't be bothered to drill the remains out and puts it back on with some missing. Then the vibration from 70mph wind slowly vibrates the tray until the remaining bolts chew through it and it sales off.

In my case it was an MR2, and I couldn't be arsed drilling the bolt out. I've improved the quality of my work no end since then.

If the original does not have an access port to drain the oil (many VAG's dont) then they are badly designed from a servicing point of view.

At least you know it has been serviced, by a back street garage or diy'er

mine was held on with screws and over time it just kept getting smashed against speed bumps and stones etc and the holes around the screws broke and it would scrape along the road. i took it off on the end

When I bought my MX5 it was missing the undertray.

I bought a used one and fitted it - the difference in refinement (for MX5 measures of refinement) is amazing.
