Was it really eight years ago?
Got it as part of the Steam summer sale just to remind myself how it used to struggle on PC's back then.Of course, with the config file tweaked so I could run at 1920x1080, even on ultra settings and with FSAA etc, it ran like a dream.
A few fan based graphical update mods later however and it wasn't running so well again haha.Looks so much nicer though.Options galore to tweak it.In fact I have never seen so many options for extra tweaks. One thing I did do was to slow down the walking pace as I always hated how fast he trotted along. It was very much a suspense killer for me.
Anyway, it has been quite nice listening to those annoying footsteps and enjoying some repetitive gameplay again. One of the mods also allows a seperate small torch to be used when you like and night vision goggles. It's amazing how well it has aged to be honest.
Click for bigger pics.Original version first, then some modded screens with the sikkmod and wulfen texture packs added..

This is getting a console release. I can't wait, it won't be as good an experience as the PC but I don't have a PC that can play games and so I haven't played a Doom game in AGES.
Doom 3 was out on consoles a few years ago? (or do I need a whoosh parrot?) I had it for the xbox but ended up cashing it in a few months ago along with some others.I was watching my dad play Doom 3, and I was really disappointed that whenever he entered a room with a big boss monster in it the game played an introductory movie for him, showing him the monster he was about to face. Real suspense killer. One of the best things about Doom 1 and 2 was the fright I used to get when I'd run around a corner and practically bounce off a fifteen foot tall brute who would roar in my face and then start hurling rockets or green fireballs at me.

The thing that really ruined Doom with Doom 3 was opening a door and NOT finding a room full of 50 imps, a Cyber Demon and hoards of flying souls...
To open a door in Doom 1 or 2 and find that, quickly running off to get some healh and ammo before strafe killing everything in the huge rooms was what it was all about!

Definitely the highlight of the Doom games. Original Quake also great fun, and was actually dark so things in the shadows would jump at you, like the chainsaw guys.Riknos said:
