Interesting to note the doesn't appear to be a MAF sensor (or they have moved it to behind the front chassis member). Also the cats are placed very close to the engine i.e. where the four pipes merge that exist each of the chambers. No idea why they would put the cats next to the engine, but it is sure gonna make it difficult to get the turbos onto a C6

2006 + Federal emissions legislation. The closer you get the cats to the cylinder head the quicker the cat lights off (starts converting). Catalysts need to get to 350 deg C before conversion commences (dependant on precious metal loading) the closer to the head the quicker it happens.
Normally the cat will light off around 45 seconds or so into the emissions test cycle, as most of the pollutants occur in the cold start the quicker you can get the cat working the better.
The nice people in the US EPA are legislating to get the overall emissions level down, there is no concession for big engines, a 6.0Ltr Vette has to pass the same test at the same emissions levels as a 1Ltr whatever. Makes life exciting for the guys that work on the new breed of muscle cars.
