Driving down the M40 near Oxford on Monday I followed a German reg "Works" Mini. Nothing unusual there you say... But how many non Countryman Mini's have rear
diffs or have I not been paying attention?

The answer is not many...yet. You were almost certainly trailing a development mule for the new new MINI due next year (I think) which is underpinned by BMW's new "diddy car" architecture that'll be used for lots of different projects, some of which are going to want driven rear wheels.

Sounds very unusual. The only (non Countryman) 4WD MINI that I have heard of was an R53 converted by Getrag as a concept.

Anyone that buys a MINI Countryman or a Traveller needs to sit in the corner and think about what they've done

most ridiculously awful looking cars i've ever seen

First time I saw a traveller I thought it was one of those DIY Limo projects they do on Top Gear

I just put it down to them not knowing any better

If there is a BMW smaller than the 1-series it will definitely be FWD.
