Hi. We operate in the financial sector and are governed by the FSA. For prudence we are considering introducing a CRB check on all new employees. Does anyone have any experience of this, is it useful, how much does it cost and who do you use to obtain the report?

Thanks

Yes, as I have staff who fit the purpose of the CRB process, i.e. to protect children and vulnerable adults from staff who may have regular access to them. If that's you, your staff need to be CRBd. More here: http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/agencies-public-bodie...

Good luck!

Remember that once you CRB your staff, you have to have it done every year for it to be relivent and there is an ongoing cost. Are you going to pay or are you going to try and get your staff to pay. If your work requires CRB due to FSA regs then you have to do it, but my personal thoughts are to many employers use CRB just to weed out those with any type of conviction. Call me daft but I belive in giving people a second chance.

www.crbdisclosureonline.co.uk

its about £70 for a detailed report.

seems a fashion at the moment for employers, everyone seems to be implementing it along with the usual credit reference check.

I also agree with what DCS01 said above.

As we see in the news, neither of them will prevent criminal activity, only flag known risks at a single point in time. Do you re-check all your employees each year ?

My understanding of it, is that if a job puts a person in regular unsupervised contact with children etc then a CRB is a must. The same goes if the job requires it under FSA rules. If a job does not fall under these 'rules' then a CRB check 'may be' unlawfull or certainly is not a requirement. However I know a number of employers ask the prospective employee to provide thier own CRB certificate to get around this.
