I have seen a car I quite fancy buying... its an x reg Audi TT 225 convertible and it looks in nice condition. Thing is, its been a CAT C in April 2011. Its been repaired but ts not had its VIC (I think its called that) check. Its stood for 6 months but it starts OK, drives well and looks OK.

The owner has lost interest in it and has asked me I want to buy it. I can probably buy it for £700.

I have had a good look around it and although it wants some work for the MOT, there does not appear to much wrong with it. For that amount of cash it would be a nice run around for the rest of the summer and as a weekend car. thing is, What do I need to do to get it on the road? what's a VIC check involve?

Can I get it MoT'ed first and then take it for a VIC test?

Is it more difficult to insure a Cat C car? I seem to recall reading something but may be mistaken.

Can't answer your VIC question but if you can buy for £700 just buy it.

Even if you can't get it back running you'll get more than that spares or repair. Much more if you have the time and space to break it.

For 700 notes get it bought, if it all goes tits up and you cant get in on the road for whatever reason part it out and get your money back and then some.

Agreed, cheap enough not to matter.

I bought a cat c damaged reparied car - it made no difference to the insurance (so you can still it insure it no problem). Re the vic thing you get a letter from dvla telling you to take it to a test centre. They basically check the vin number is correct (so it's not a stolen car been replated or whatever I think) and give you a pass letter. It's simple.

Has it got a V5? If not, it will definitely need a VIC, but it's simple. Doesn't take long, they check the numbers and plates on the car and then give you a certificate so you can get a V5 IIRC.

If you don't want it, I'll be next in line please!

Some insurance companies will not insure a previous write off. With those that will it isnt a problem until you come to claim and they will massively under value the vehicle.
but as already stated, I dont think you could possibly go wrong at £700.

£700 sounds so cheap as to question if there is something else not right about it (cat C aside).

My car was Cat C last Xmas.
I havent got round to the VIC yet.
I renewed the MOT last week - no problem - as the old MOT was about to expire.
You only need the VIC for a new V5.
We are still with the same insurers that paid out - First Central.

Good luck with your purchase - My Cat C has proven to be a bargain!
