Bridgestone Potenza SO3s apparently sh1t. New TVRs wear Toyos. Has anybody tried Toyos on a Griff? Any thoughts welcome.

My thoughts are that the tests were done with a Ford F8ckarse which is FWD and has very different handling/load characteristics to a TVR. If they did the same tests in their old long termer Z3M Coupe and I wonder if the results would have been the same? (In fact they commented that they used the Focus because it was similar to many affordable hot haches, which many of their readers may be driving, which is fair enough.)

I've never tried Toyos. I'm really surprised the Continentals did so well in the test though.

I have TOYO proxies TS-1's on my Chimeara with 17" alloys, I have been very pleased with the performance and they look great too.

I seem to recall that you cant buy toyos in the right speed rating for the standard front wheels on griffs/chims.

Got SO3s on the front, SO2s on the rear of my car and no complaints.

Biggest complaints seemed to come from people with 18" wheels, as the sidewalls are harder than SO2s

I opted for Goodyear Eagle F1s on the rears recently which I am very happy with. They are the older style F1s though (not the newer model that won the evo test)...

You can get these in a Z rating for the rears and a W rating for the fronts (up to 167mph) so I reckon I'll replace the fronts with a set and give them a go...

I have to disagree with the SO3 argument. I've got SO3 PP's on the front of my Scooby and the grip is astonishing. Massive improvement on the previous Bridgestones that were on there. Put them on just in time to enjoy some of the brilliant roads around Lancaster this week. Wheeeeeeeee.

I had Eagle F1 GSC's on the Mustang and the Viper, probably going to go for them all round when the current set of S02's get a little tired on the Chim, marvellous tyres I have to say.

Matt.

tried SO 3's on my 17" wheels and it was awful, now have Toyo's and they are superb, the car has never handled better. Toyo's have a softer sidewall so suit low profile applications better. Don't make the mistake of thinking what will work on a Scooby will work on a TVR, the cars are poles apart in handling/weight/geometry/etc

Agreed... The wheels on my Scooby are the original 15" so they have entirely different handling characteristics. As posted on another thread, different tyres should be used for specific applications. I've found the SO3 to be superb, but it's a heavier 4WD car compared to the Griff.

Evo ran the test at Mireval race track (owned by Goodyear and used by them for all testing)

Hardly surprising then that the Goodyear F1 won it!!!!!

Test was a complete waste of time IMHO

As we all know, Toyo dont make a Z rated 15" tyre (standard griff 500 front size). They only make a V rated tyre (for cars upto 150mph performance). I want to fit Toyos as S02s cant be found at the mo. As my new tyre requirement getting nearer I rang my insurance broker - asked chap there if fitting 15" VR Toyos would invalidate my policy with them or make any future claim tricky - he tells me not! Call insurers. He tells me 'you need to speak to your broker'. Me 'so if the broker hasnt a problem with VR tyres, you wont either?'. Him 'thats right'

I'm not convinced though. And I know Steve H isnt either. Would give any nasty insurer a route to wriggle out of payment in the event of ...

For a long time it has been common knowledge that fitting a tyre with a lower speed rating than a vehicle is capable of achieving is illegal in the UK.

Actually, that may well be an old wives tale. It certainly isn't a cause for MOT failure. See the MOT Tester's Manual page on tyres at

www.motuk.co.uk/manual_410.htm

The relevant bit says

"Note: A Class III or IV vehicle tyre which appears to be of inadequate size, ply or speed rating for the vehicle or its use is not a reason for rejection. However, the vehicle presenter should be informed."

Class III is 3 Wheeled Vehicles (up to 450kg unladen weight), Class IV is cars (up to 8 Passenger seats).

One thing I learnt from this page was that the legal minimum of 1.6mm tyre depth does not apply to minibuses with more than 8 seats. For these the old limit of 1mm still applies, which is rather alarming, don't you think.
