How many other truckies out there?
Discussion
I used to but not any more, HGVII licence holder or whatever they now call it.
However I do have fond liking of sticking the car on cruise in the lorry lane at lorry speed for hours on end whilst listening to the Archers, doing office type phone calls etc & generally not paying an awful lot of attention to the rest of the world,
so does that count?

to truckers...lots is said about you guys holding other road users up (see my rant on the audi thread)....but was wondering what the views would be on something like (this is HGV aimed)
banning lorries from oevrtaking on motorways between 6:30 and 9:00am and 3:30 and 6:00pm (for exmaple) but in return having limiters raised to, say, 65 from 8:00pm to 6:00am?
This is obviously not well thought out but the general idea being offer quicker and quieter journey times for truckers at the times when they'll haveleast impact on the roads?

You and me against the world then Phil !
You know that every bad move or careless bit of driving in a truck will now be blamed on us! Incidently, the zipping thing is a real laugh - nowhere have i said that I do it, but its good watching as other PHers go into self destruct mode as they overheat and spew out their venom on here!
Steve
It's a sign of how much traffic jams wind people up Steve. All of us have got somewhere to go, and we'd all like to get there on time. It's gotta be said though, there are some complete tw@s who give us all a bad name, I guess we'll just have to try and get our point over. It strikes me as pointless to generalise, and say stuff like all heavies/reps/bikers/pedestrians etc etc are useless/dangerous/mindless..whatever. I take my job/driving very seriously, I suspect you do too, in fact I suspect most PH'ers do as well. A little understanding goes a long way.
Looking up, nightmare has got a good idea, trouble is good ideas that improve safety need the powers that be to take their heads out of their arses. I haven't seen any figures, but I'm betting speed limiters were a step backwards. Getting rid of these damn things would be a godsend. We could overtake, then get back in, instead of holding people up. Imagine the public outcry if EVERY vehicle had a speed limiter fitted. Of course nobody would tailgate someone else, or crawl past 0.2 Mph faster than the person they are overtaking..................
Yeah right !

Ps Have you got a roll of carpet I can borrow

Erm, well 65 is above the Speed limit on Motorways for Trucks! We're only 'allowed' to do 60, although some prick in an office somewhere a few years ago decided that UK trucks should be limited to 56mph
Yeah, lets limit all cars to 66 mph, and then see the public outcry.
Anyway, I digress.
You said the idea wasn't well thought out, I agree
For two reasons. The least congestion is caused at night, most of the stuff moved at night isn't time sensitive, I said most before anyway jumps on that one.
And how would you control the 'variable' limiter? Most drivers know there way around the limiter in most trucks. A few croc clips here and there and the limiter is bypassed. I know a bloke who was once caught at 104mph on the M6 north of Penrith!
Right, here is my suggested.
The main problems at the moment are
1, everyone wants to do sixty but can't, so you end up with all the lorries travelling within 1 mph of each other, depending on limiter variations. This makes overtaking a long drawn out affair, which, while neccesary, is a pain to other road users.
2, There is too much of a speed differential between cars and trucks. This causes HGV drivers to get frustrated when they can't pull out into lane 2 because of the rather large closing speed.
3, Middle lane hogs who just WILL NOT move out into the outside lane for 5 seconds to let lorries pull into lane 2. this again causes frustration.
Solution.
Up the Lorry speed limit to 65 permanently. Set the limiter to 70, those who want to exceed the speed limit can do, those who don't, won't. Cuts down on overtaking time and reduces closing speeds between cars and lorries. Thats 1 AND 2 delt with in one go.
3. All Middle Laners should have their licences removed and cars crushed!!
I haven't adressed all the points you raised but I will give it some more thought

I think you may have found the heart of the problem. i.e. speed limiters. I propose that all vehicles (obviously excepting those of the emergency services) be fitted with a 90k speed limiter. Then it would be no more "them and us" and everyone is happy!

I appreciate that this argument is "off the top of your head", so lets all try and fine tune it. The idea of no overtaking is great if all trucks can run at 56. In this case, commercial traffic would not be held up. The times you have mentioned are some of the most critical for the parcel boys. They must be back at the hub by a certain time in order that the load can be sorted and loaded onto the "suicide squad" (sprinter vans etc).
No overtaking would possibly work on long level stretches of motorway, with passing allowed on uphill sections. The first drawback I see is this: With a constant stream of trucks in lane one, it will be difficult for anyone to join the motorway. It would only take one numpty to force his way in and make a truck brake for the "caterpillar effect" to lead to truck 20 in the stream doing an emergency stop.
I also have reservations as to whether you could physically fit all the trucks into a single lane.
Given that the inside lane tends to move more freely in congested areas (cars in lane 3 too close together and "panic " braking), would it be feasable to ban cars from lane 1?
What about the 7.5 tonners which can currently run at 70mph in the outside lane?
Food for thought
