2005 Toyota Avensis Diesel Gearbox issue

A collegue at work has just asked for me to put a thread up as he is having issues with his Avensis gearbox and is after some advice

The problem started when the car started jumping out of 5th gear, and then progressed to it jamming in 6th. After pulling over it popped out of 6th, but now he is driving around with only the first 4 gears. What is the likely cause, and would it be an easy fix or new gearbox time?

Also how difficult is it to change the gearbox on one of these?

Fifth gears are a common problem on the avensis diesel. They mess up the teeth on the fifth gears.


Weve had loads in with the same problem. They cost roughly about £250 inc Vat from toyota and then theres labour.

With a second hand gearbox u dont know the history...
