I'm off work today and the weather looked decent so I was going to go for a bit of a cross country blast this morning. I did however feel a bit less than 100% when I got up, not wrecked but I could feel last nights celebration a bit too much.

Got me thinking about how many people must drive regularly when hungover there must be loads of cars going around with the driver feeling worse for wear!

I dont drink, so don't drive when hungover, but when I did drink, I would leave it 24 hours+ before driving again.

Chances are you still over the limit the morning after.

if you have had 5-6 pints you will most likely be over limit first thing in the morning.

I have driven hungover, I'd like to know the correlation between what I felt like and what I actually blew on a meter.

I do try and leave it until 12pm+ until I drive again if possible

Avoid drinking during the week these days as i'm up at 5:30 for work and my body doesn't handle the booze as well as it did in my youth. If I'm feeling the worse for wear at the weekend I'll usually get the wife to drive if we're going out.

How long before the inevitable "I drive with a hangover all the time and have never been killed/killed anyone so what's the problem?" post

Very rarely. I'll wait until at least after lunch if I have to. Last year I went out on a Friday night until about 2am and was called into work out of the blue at 9 to open up the office. I felt horrendous and when I got there I stayed till about 12 as didn't feel safe driving back. Never again.

Not true.

You may well be under the limit but still in no condition to drive.

"The results are disturbing. On average, the student participants, all of whom were under the legal limit, drove almost 10 per cent faster and committed twice as many traffic violations after a night out than they did with no drink in their system. After my turn, during which I had to pull over in the virtual world to throw up in the real one, Dr Stewart Birrell gives me my results. They're not good. For almost 20 per cent of my journey I've been driving over the speed limit and I've committed seven driving violations."

Unfortunately I can't get to the Brunel paper that is referred to in the story.

have done.

don't anymore.

Couple of years ago i'd been on a night out that went from small to big but still had to be up and out house by 9am. Should not have driven but did. Felt terrible and was very nervous etc. Swore then, never again.

out last friday night - got in at 4am but stopped drinking alcohol around 2am and then ate (dirty, dirty kebab).

slept in. woke up feeling rough as a badger's arse.

but big breakfast, plenty of water / OJ and just sitting around chatting with a mate meant that i felt much better so I drove at about 2pm. Took it nice and steady even then.

Seen first hand how long alcohol stays in your system for and how you can feel fine but still be way over the limit.

I use a hangover as a reminder that I may be still over the limit and even if I am not then driving is still probably not a good idea if wooly headed, same goes for feeling crap generally.

I think a fair proportion of the country shouldn't be driving on any given day for a lot of different reasons.

Often. I'd wager the rest of my life's earnings I'm still paying more attention and driving more safely than 90% of other road users.

Hmm sounds a bit dodgy to me driving in that state. Why not have a quick snifter before you set off. You'll feel much better! wink

This was a joke by the way.

I've never had a hang over. The advantage of having a fast metabolism I guess.

I rode my motorbike to it's MOT effectively pi$$ed a few weeks ago. FAR too much to drink the night before. I had to get it done though, for reasons.

It was only 5 minutes to the garage and I took it really, really steady.

I have done it but avoid it now, plus my hangovers are 10x worse than they used to be. My hangover days now consist of staying in bed and sleeping, that way I don't feel the pain.

Once many moons ago i drove hungover and i knew i shouldn't have, I didnt care what happened to me it was the thought of harming others.

I thought to myself "never again" and i can hand on heart say i have never repeated the instance.

That being said. I havent been drunk in years as i only drink moderately now anyhow.

Once or twice, took it very gently as it felt like there was no fluid left in my head and my brain was rattling around in my skull every time I accelerated, braked or cornered. Not something I like to do at all.

Hangover isn't a function of Metabolism speed, it is down to Stella ingestion versus your lattitude within the UK, those in a more southerly direction do tend to metabolise their drinks quicker by adding lemonade.

A very good friend of mine was killed by a drunk driver. He had just finished university, paid his way the whole way through, had the world at his feet. he was just waiting to find out his results. Heading home from his girlfriend's house, a drunk driver with no licence hit his car head on, killing them both instantly. I will not drive unless I know that I have had plenty of time to recover from drinking. If I know that my driving ability is in any way impaired, I will not get behind the wheel. It is not worth it.
