This item appears on the service schedule for all services on my Hyundai Santa Fe. What exactly should the garage inspect? That they are free to move in and out?

Reason is that I recently had a 120,000 mile service carried out by a Hyundai dealer (yes, I know now I should have gone to a smaller garage frown ). A month later and only 636 miles more on the clock, rear caliper was sticking and the brake pad had worn down to the metal and the disc scored beyond redemption. Turns out that I only had 2.5mm of pad left. Did the garage ring me up during the service to advise replacing them? No. Had they done so then I would have agreed to it and presumably, if actually checking the calipers work properly was not part of the 'inspection', then they would have at least picked up on them seizing when they replaced the pads?

They tell me that the seizing is cosmetic and that they have freed them up. Is this right? I have no idea.

But I do think(know) I have been fleeced.

TIA

If they use the same handbrake calipers as my coupe, then the sliders can rust up badly, and the handbrke mech fails.

Yes, but if they rust badly they should be picked up as part of the 'inspection' for which the OP is being charged.

So presumably the calipers get 'inspected' but not reported.

"Yep, I inspected them. Rusty as buggery, they were." *Puts tick in box*

To inspect them properly usually means disassembly/removal of gaitors, etc, which they wouldn't do.

Thinking about this a bit more, had they bothered to call me during the service and said 'Your brake pads have only 2.5mm left, would you like us to replace them', I'd have asked them how many miles left to which they'd have replied around 2-3000 miles. A No-brainer to ask them to replace them at which point presumably the callipers would have been pushed back into their seals and any problems would have shown up then.

But they didn't.
