Been feeling s
t and not sleeping for two weeks and after a second trip to the docs just he thinks i may have the above....
I've never had it before (27) and am having a bloodtest tuesday. Literally never felt so rundown and crap. My throats awful but i cant take the penicillin iv been prescribed until we know whether it is GF or not.
So....GF? whats the score? as i said been crap two weeks but how long can it last and whats the treatment? or just MTFU (yes, i should have asked but i just wasn't with it)
Been given some co-codamal to ease the pain and help with temp etc.

The general; fluids, rest, stay warm, not much else you can do unfortunately. Yes you will feel utterly rubbish & probably get next to no sleep for abit longer yet. Its pretty unlikely you will get a positive blood test result but thats just the nature of the beast, a negative result definitely doesn't mean you haven't had it.
I had it during my uni finals a few years ago & it properly knocked me out for about a month (my revision period very helpful) & took 3-4 months ish to fully get over it, I was a lucky one & got a positive blood test result
I really do sympathise

I've had it. Don't want to bring you down but its f
king awful. Its a virus so the quacks can't give you anything for it. The worse part about it is the tiredness, walking up the stairs can be knackering.
Also it stays in your body for years, I used to get flare-ups when I got very tired or stressed. You will get repeats of it, although none are worse than the 1st.
Best thing is rest and fluids. Take as many painkillers as you can stand, I found Ibuprofen and co-codamol the best (double dosing). Get a throatspray and Strepsils. Eat ice cream and drink hot drinks for the throat.
And order some DVD boxsets, you will feel s
t for quite a while

t for quite a whileAs I said in Trivia, I had GF a good few years ago - and was very ill with it. It took me a long time to recognise I was ill (I had an 'unhealthy' lifestyle at the time and thought it was just the after-effects). I finally realised something was wrong when I physically couldn't walk the 100 metres from the underground station to my flat door and ended up sat on the kerb until a friend passed and half carried me home.
Took me 18 months before I didn't keep having relapses - to the point I left my degree course and then got repeat funding for the years.
There is a danger that you will hurt your spleen - I was told it enlarges due to the illness, and is therefore more prone to damage if you exert yourself or bash yourself so be careful for a good while.
Only treatment is rest, drink plenty of fluid and don't try to rush back into work etc too soon.

Just got home from hospital....
Really went downhill sunday and my dad took me to the out of hours GP at the hospital who was very pro-active and had me admitted there and then. Given IV fluids and antibiotics as my throat was so bad i literally couldn't swallow and had a temp of pushing 40.
Spend the night on a drip and actually got a few hours decent sleep, first time in weeks! Doc confirmed its GF as they suspected tonsilitus (sp) which i was praying for....
Anyway, home now, throat still sore as hell but i can get food and fluids down. Really not looking foward to this dragging on for the coming weeks/months
On the up-side this was my first ever hospital (a and e aside) experience since er, birth (im 27) and i couldn't praise the staff i had contact with enough. The NHS gets slated a lot but i reckon we should alll be very grateful for it, i know i am!

I had GF a few years ago, it's awful.
The early symptoms were awful. I was rushed to hospital with a resting pulse of 132 bpm and every gland in my body was hurting like buggery. Doctors were convinced I'd been snaffling coke or amphetamines but blood test confirmed GF.
I was permanently exhausted for about 3 months but then started to get gradually better. There were good days and bad days that seemingly had no pattern. I was quite fit at the time but after a few months with GF I couldn't walk the length of the street without feeling knackered.
Took about 6 months to feel better again, but for about 2 years afterwards I was a lot more susceptible to getting ill with minor things where normally I wouldn't have done. People often don't believe you're ill because you don't have a lot of the normal "ill" symptoms.
Lots of rest and good food did the trick for me but it's a long recovery if you get it bad.

It can be quite unpleasant. I had pretty badly it several years ago - Initially my GP thought I had a kidney infection as I had really bad pain across my back and a temperature approaching 40C. Several days of antibiotics of course did nothing, so I was taken to hospital where I remained for the next 2 and a half weeks. I was on IV fluids, antibiotics steroids as my throat had swollen shut with secondary infections and I couldn't swallow, and came close to being intubated as I couldn't breath properly. I lost more than 2 stone, had an enlarged spleen and became jaundiced due to associated hepatitis.
When I got home I was so weak I couldn't go upstairs without stopping halfway for 5 minutes. I was off work for nearly 3 months in total, and it was far longer than that before I felt anything like my normal self. I wasn't allowed to drink alcohol at all for 6 months following and had to go for monthly blood tests to make sure my liver was recovering OK, and wasn't allowed to do any strenuous physical activity or lifting for 3 months due to the enlarged spleen (not that I had the energy).
The important thing is not to rush back to work. You really won't do yourself any favours and can make recovery much longer than it would be otherwise. There isn't anything you can do to get rid of the illness faster, so just make sure you stay hydrated and sleep plenty. You probably won't feel like doing much else anyway.

Thread resurrection!
I had a blood test for this today. Initially thought it was tonsillitis but the antibiotics weren’t touching it (of course).
I did test positive though so they now think I have both as clindamycin isn’t touching my throat either.
Day 6 is drawing to a close, my fever has dropped a bit, I don’t feel too fatigued but my throat is a wreck and very painful. I’ve never felt anything like it and I’ve had tonsillitis as an adult more than once and that isn’t a bag of laughs.
Hoping now the fever has broken the throat may go with it.
Sucks though!
