just fitted new rear wheel bearings torqued up to 230lbs but still have a little play on both wheels,it was my understanding that once torqued up there was no play in the bearings can anyone confirm if this is normal or a solution to the problem.

thanks

True .. no play.

Maybe something else wrong. Wear on the bearing housing ?

How much play are we talking about ?

maybe about 1/2 ml but we had to press bearing into housing and checking other sources they are saying torque up to 250lb could it be the bushes on the axle stay bar

thanks

been out and checked everthing again and could not understand why play on wheel was only top and bottom and not sideways on wheelsillyforgot to check uj's under strain checked before rebuild seemed ok but i can feel a slight movement when moving wheels. So hopefully bearings are fine now to get driveshafts off.

Hmm sounds like your housing has gone oval, I have the same problem, play in a vertical plane only and after rotating the wheel play is in the same plane.

I replaced wheel bearings - twice and replaced the upright and yep "new" upright was just the same as the original one so as it's passes an MOT I'm now ignoring it, I have had the original part measured and it is oval can't remember how much by, but it's enough for the bearing to slop about but not enough to be filled with stud n bearing fit as that all just got pushed out with the bearing.

Looks like I have a similar problem on freshly rebuilt driveshafts (well only done around 350 Miles) with no play in the UJ’s. Top to bottom I have around 8mm of play measured at the wheel, side to side around 3mm. The movement is visible when looking at the stub axle from under the car. Everything was fine 350 Miles ago and I can’t believe that this bearing has failed so quickly. At first I though that I’d forgotten to tighten the wheel nuts it was that bad.

I assume that they are a pig to replace?

If by 1/2ml you mean 0.5mm. Then you don't have a problem. If you mean 1 or 2 mm at the radius of the tyre, then you are still probably ok. If however you mean 1 or 2 mm at the hub face, then you have a problem. These are not taper bearings. Basically a very small amount of play at the tyre radius can be expected, but no more.

The UJ's can indeed give a feeling of play if loose/worn. Especially the outer ones.
