I was just thinking the other day that some of the cars that I didn't get (or even like) when they were new are some of my favourites now. For instance:

Audi Quattro - too big outside but small inside, crap boot, cheap interior (however now I think it's the coolest car that Audi have ever made and would love a red or white 20v. What happened to the Quattro concept? I would love them to build it but think that they are probably too forward thinking to rake up the past).

Bentley Turbo R/Arnage/Continental R/T - I'm still too young for a Bentley but I'm a bit sad about what they have become and miss these "proper" British Bentleys.

Honda NSX - I wasn't really interested at the time as it didn't have a Ferrari/Porsche/Aston badge but now a light mid-engined sports car with a high-revving naturally-aspirated V6 and the promise of Japanese reliability sounds like my perfect car. Unfortunately they're now probably rarer and more expensive than a Ferrari/Porsche/Aston too.

McLaren F1 - I now appreciate what a great piece of engineering it was (is) and that there will be nothing quite like it again. I also think the design has aged well and it still looks contemporary.

Maserati Shamal/Ghibli/Quatrroporte (1990s) - Boxy and ugly compared to their sleek contemporaries from Ferrari/Lamborghini but I now think they are efortlessly cool and all the better if not everyone gets them.

Jaguar XJS - It looked all wrong after the sleek, curvy E-Type but now I think they look great, especially as a convertible with cross-spoke alloys.

Porsche 968/928 - Neither are great lookers but it's a shame that Porsche would rather build diesel saloons and SUVs than provide direct replacements for these front-engined classics (don't really like the Cayman and I understand why the Boxster exists but still don't like it).

Mercedes-Benz SL (W129) - Huge and slab-sided and always a bit brash I thought but I now get what Mercedes was all about and this is quintissential Mercedes.

BMW 8-Seies - Again, a bit vulgar I thought at the time but now I think they look great. Why is it though that a manufacturer who has made many great driver's cars and some awesome engines can't seem to produce a successful flagship model. The M1 was awesome and the Z8 not very successful but now rare and expensive. How come Audi (who have no history of making supercars) managed to get it right (commercially at least) with the R8 first time? A BMW supercar would have to be pretty awesome, right?

That's probably most of the cars that I can think of. Which cars did you not get when they were new but love now and why?

It seemed a bit clinical (like the new one does now to be honest). Yes it was the fastest production car but lacked the drama of an F40 or Diablo. I recognise it now as one of the all time greats though!

BMW E24. (Does that make me sound really old? Because I am, but also because when I was a kid they were an old design already). Love them now, still hate the XJS though.

944s. I thought they were the rich chavs (of the day) choice following on from their xr2 and 3 litre capri. Not what I wanted at all.
Except now I've had 2 944s and my current turbo is just great.

I didn't like it when it first came out, it seemed a plain design with a novelty driving position, a waste of a great engine. Nothing changed.
