Hi all. Sorry PH team, the search thread is down so I don't know if this is covered elsewhere.

Car had an erratic idle speed and started to choke as if it wasn't getting enough air and/or fuel. I noticed a fuel line leak and fixed this, plus fitted a smooth bore induction kit. Now the engine starts at 3000rpm and keeps slowly rising.

I have tried an ecu reset and checked for leaks...all seem okay. I haven't cleaned the stepper motor as this was done a short while ago and I presume this hasn't got clogged in the one week that the car has been standing. Do I presume wrong?

Any ideas will be great.

PS:- When I started the car up I got a 1.5m long dirty wet spray mark on the ground behind each exhaust. Smells fairly neutral so I'm expecting the new air filter oil was probably not completely dry and got sucked through...any other ideas?

Although the end of the stepper may well be clean, they can become sticky in operation not opening and closing correctly or moving slowly. If its stuck open this can give a high tickover when the engine is warm

May be worth removing it and cleaning the shaft assembly so it operates freely and then see how you go on.

That makes sense.
My tickover, when I first got the car, was all over the place too, but I was told this was normal.
A few weeks later a friend spotted that my car was about to burst into flames, thanks to badly perished fuel pipes, and during the course of fitting new ones, the plenum was taken off and it was found that my stepper motor had been broken off and glued back in place.
Since I have had the new stepper motor, the tickover has been to German repmobile standards of consistency.

no, as I said, the stepper motor was cleaned just a while ago. Everything else was new and okay.

It turned out though that when reattaching the throttle mechanism I had stupidly hooked the butterfly end under the forked head (??) from the throttle cable as opposed to into it (I have no idea how to describe the components). Although the whole throttle system worked, this obviously left the butterfly open a small amount leading to the issues I mentioned. Put it back together correctly and started her up. Seems fine. I'll go for a test drive tomorrow though as the weather is less than fun here. Maybe I'll be back with bad news...hope not!

Perfectly normal, moist air enters the exhaust and condenses in the tubes. I Often get several litres of water out the back if shes been sat for a few weeks. Have to check that no one is standing behind when I start her up.....

Oh and do make sure your wifes sparkling clean car isnt parked right behind you when you fire up after a bit of a lay up.....

Just stick it in a bit of petrol over night ,soon cleans up ..Just about half way up the stepper motor.
