V8 GT Buying Advice?
Discussion
Hi,
I'm looking to buy my first Esprit after several years of contemplation.
I've been to look at a 98 V8 GT and would really appreciate some advice about it.
The services upto 2000 are all spot on.
The last three services were an A in 2000, a B in 2002 and another A in 2004 (April). It's only covered 3 thousand miles in between each service so I'm not sure how much this would affect the value of the car.
There is also a small tear in the passenger door panel and I'm not sure how easy/expensive this would be to put right but does spoil the interior a bit.
It's covered 20000 miles, excellent bodywork/wheels etc.
Not sure mechanically as it's the only one I've been to see but it sounded and seemed to run ok. Perhaps it looked a little awkward when cold at low speeds.
How much would you expect to pay bearing in mind the service history and tear?
Would you buy one at all without FLSH?
Thanks in advance.

Generally its not a good idea to buy the first one you see. Take a look at several cars - you'll be better able to make a decision then.
Not sure i understand the question regarding maintenance affecting the value of the car?
Ring a dealer and get a price for a new door interior panel - use this in your price negotiations (but if you do buy the car try a local trimmer first as this may be cheaper).
Cambelt service is due at 24k by the way, thats normally circa 1200 at a dealer.
Suggest you get the car checked by a specialist.
Things to check:
- original clutch? they normally last 25-30k so you may be due a change, its expensive ~1300 at a dealer
- check the cats, these can fail - get to see a recent emissions check/mot
- exhausts can crack, easy fix but annoying
- see if its had any engine work - if its had leaking liners and had this fixed thats a good thing.

I can see the previous owners thinking on servicing. I did precisely 2600 miles last year, and I still need convincing of the merits of chucking away a sumpful of Mobil 1 after that mileage just because it is 12 months old. Maybe a full service every 2 years and a pre-MOT check every other year might do, with the cambelt done on age???
