My mrs is considering changing her Golf GTI for something a bit more practical because of the needs of her business, carrying the dog and the fact she lives in a village and the roads are barely better than farm tracks.

She's quite smitten with the Skoda Octavia Scout, has a budget of about £12k. I don't know much about these any comments would be welcome. Is there a similar car she should be considering? She doesn't want a car more than 3 or 4 years old as she plans to keep it for quite a long time (5 or 6 years)

The other requirement is it must be diesel, not more than 60 or 70,000 miles and if it has a tow bar even better.

Like the Subaru idea.

Great car, always popular, incredible residual values.
We could probably sell Scouts all day long at the £12000 mark.

We've noticed they command strong money. She really, really likes this car. It seems to tick all the boxes in terms of her requirements.

I had one as a courtesy car from Skoda last week, lovely car. Very comfy, lots of toys, my one had a 6 speed box, though not sure if this is standard. The 2 litre TDI had great mid range acceleration too.

I've shown her all the alternatives, it's the Skoda she wants. Got to say if that's what she wants it's an interresting choice, I assume its essentially a variation on the Audi Quattro system?

It uses the haldex system as the A3 does.

Ive heard a lot of good reviews on the Scout. My friends after one.
Second hand values are strong, and its actually one of the cars worth buying new online because of the discounts from somewhere like drive the deal.

My neighbour has a Yeti, only a 1.2TSI, but he loves it.

Have to say, it does look good, but I'd want 2.0TDI-DSG if I were buying one.

Ours has just had its second service and I'm very pleased with it. I went for the 1.8 Tsi however as we only do around 6k per year.

Discount the Subaru diesel idea.

I've just got rid of an 09 Legacy diesel, 50k miles in past 20 months and it was the worst diesel I have ever had.

It never broke down but belched black smoke out the back like a diesel from the 90’s. it was not economical, struggled to average 40 mpg on a run and was incredibly poor on NVH.

I wish you luck with your new car but I'd advise to not look at a derv Subaru.

PS - The CR diesel from VAG group feels like an engine 20 years ahead of the Subaru in terms of power, refinement and economy. I've driven it in both Seat Exeo and VW Passat format and have been very impressed.
