The connectors used for the ECU temperature sensors use mini timer connectors which as you have said have a small wire clip that stops them falling off.
To unplug the connector, grip the connector across it's longest edge where the wire is and squeeze
the wire towards the body of the plug with your thumb which will then bend the wires outwards on the shorter edge and this will enable the plug to release. No need for wrenches and big screw drivers to release. Once you've done once it it's easy
