3 J Cass Yachts

Today, for the first time ever, 3 J Class yachts raced around the Isle-of-Wight for the magnificent 'Kings Hundred Guinea Cup'.

This cup, 2 feet tall of gilded solid silver, was first presented in 1937 by King George VI for racing at the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club. Today the Cup will be presented to the owner of the winning J Class yacht. This is a 'one off' race, so whoever wins today takes the Cup.

There is also another magnificent Cup. This is the Corinthian Kings Cup. It was presented in 1914 by King George V. It is a massive solid silver Trophy. For this cup only the 'amateur helmsmen' can compete. This rules 'Ranger' out of the competition, but the result is on the combination of races in the Solent J Class Regatta. At present both 'Velsheda' and 'Lionheart' are on equal points, so whichever wins today will take the Corinthian Cup.

Straight in at number one on my lottery win list. Someone said once "I've sailed bigger yachts, i've sailed faster yachts...but nothing quite compares to sailing a J-Class".

Nothing selfish about it. Not as if they are a public concern, they are private vessels. Why should they sail across oceans, at great expense, for your benefit?

I hear he ran aground on Friday.

We were on the Harbour Masters Launch all day yesterday. Lots of fun!

Ranger was aground for about 15 mins before the start of Thursday race.

I'm not sure why Rainbow wasn't there on Saturday for the 100 guineas cup.

If they hadn't publicised that they weren't going to take part then it wiuldn't really matter.

Had to do some repair work on Velsheda out in BVI Tortola back in the late 90's for a week staying on-board,so got the crew to send me up the mast.Must admit i was cr--ping it a bit

We were loitering about next to Ranger a couple of months back, watching the crew pootle about coiling bits of rope, washing things down, hoovering the fender covers etc and I was starting to get envious until they sent the guy up the mast. Nope.

Jeez, you only take a photo like that once I imagine!

J-Class Yachts are lovely things!
