Dilemma I am sure many have had before; I have been running a GTi 138 for the past few years now (2 years to the day actually) and still love the car. I am split between selling and buying a GTi 180 now the insurance premiums have come down for me, or to sink £1500+ into various suspension, brake, noise, and power modification into my existing P and J.

Financially I don't actually think there is much in it. To get a 180 in the same mint condition my 138 is in I would be looking at around the £2800 mark, resale value of my 138 being 2k. The way I look at it buying a GTi 180 is like buying a nicely and extensively modified GTi 138. However if you are looking to modify for 200hp + then the GTi 138 is a better car to start with apparently. The GTi 180 I think would also sort one of my main gripes with my current car: awful seats.

Both car would have to deal with the occasional track day, so Ferrado pads, Brembo disks and some DOT 5.1 fluid is on the shopping list regardless of what I opt for, (I hear braided hoses are a bit of a waist of money for an occasion track user?).

So PH anyone owned one or both of the above, and been here before?

Frank.

I don't know much about the model, but assuming you'll be selling it at a future point in time I'd get the 180. You're more likely to keep more of the money you've spent than you would upgrading parts on a car - which can make them tricky to sell.

If it's a hot hatch you're after i'd look alot further than a 206gti. Honda civic type r, focus st170, golf gti/r32, are all much better cars for similar money.

The 306gti is a better (and cheaper) drive than the 206 imo.
