Sprint / hillcimb class championship / event mk1 Golf GTI
Discussion
Hi,
my new allround competition car (classic rally, autotest, autosolo, hillclimb, sprint) is arriving any day so I thought I'd better start booking this year's events. I'm ok for the rallies and autotests / solos but I need to change championship for sprints / hillclimbs becuase the last one was marque-specific. I'll only do a couple of sprints / hills this year but it would be nice to be in a class with another competitor or against a realistic target time. I realise this is going to be difficult but there might be a class out there that would suit it / me.
Car is an absolutely standard 1981 Mk1 Golf GTI 1600.
Any ideas?

You'll probably struggle to find another competitor in a similar car, that said the ACSMC and AEMC currently run their standard classes with a break at 1600cc. Might be perfect.
Excellent answer and good news. Thanks. AEMC (I'm already a memeber of an Eastern Club) has a class for standard cars up to 1600, so I might have a chance there. It even had two regular competitors last year! ACSMC has a similar class but I can't see from a quick glance if it has any competitors.
I think it's quite popular at some events (you might have to trawl some re)sults, they had ten entered at the Abingdon Carnival and the event classes were set up to suit:

I'm the only entry in the ACSMC hillclimb series and have only down a couple of events, so sprinting might be more competitive..

ASWMC hillclimb championship may be too much of a trek for you but there is always a good turn out in A2 roadgoing 1400 - 1800cc and there is bound to be someone putting in similar times to compete with. There is another Golf in that class although it is slightly 'improved' over standard.
Hi - OP here. I started this thread over a year ago but the arrival of twins meant I only got one event done this year so I'm going to ask a similar question for 2014. I'm looking for a very near standard class (most clubs call it SA / SB) and / or classic class, idealy with a capacity break at 1600cc (as I have a 1600!)
So far: AEMC looks good but is sprints only, Chester and Longton both too far away, thanks (I'm in Norwich), NSCC is a good call but has the capacity split at 1400, though they do have a classics section, good range of venues in Service Hydraulics but only one person in the class (SB as 1400cc split) in 2013.
Any more ideas or knowledge of likely 2014 changes gratefully recieved.
Thanks

Hi,
Maybe have a look at autosolos in 2014? you could enter the BTRDA national B championship as long as your tyres aren't list 1B.
ok, the class is 1400-2000 but a mk1 golf gti does have 'added lightness'
I think you would do ok and the costs compared to sprinting are significantly less.

- also there may be some other championships you could enter that share the rounds eg cotswolds motor sports group so you could be in multi champs for one entrance fee.
- also look at the Anglian Autosolo Challenge - the last round this year is sunday at Debden, but hopefully they will run a 2014 challenge.
