Evening All

I am after a fun to drive car that's fits more or less the criteria in the title. I'm not bothered by make/image (I've owned two protons) so any ideas welcome.

Thanks
Law

Do you want to achieve 40mpg while hooning all the way to 60 in under 8 seconds? Cos that just ain't going to happen Jude!!

THAT!

My Clio 172 will do 0-60 in 6.6 seconds, and will achieve over 40 MPG, if you drive like a granny - my average this tank was 32 MPG, most of it driving to work and back, and a good hoon out today. But it does prefer super unleaded, which does take away some of the benefit.

Fiat Coupe a good bet (tall gearing) but again, you wont see 40 in general use.

Peugeot 106 GTI or Saxo VTS will likely be similar to the Clio.

Primera GT if you need something bigger, but again it will take granny driving even to see 40.

Golf Mk4 GT TDI with a remap will get you closest, but although it will be quick, it will be a bit dull too.

No chance matey.

I had one, best I saw was 36 MPG, and that's after a tediously boring 60 mph cruise. Average was 25 or less.

Ford Puma.

It may take 9 seconds to get to 60 but the way these things drive is beyond belief!

I absolutely love mine, cost me £1000 a year ago and has been round bedford autodrome all day, 7000 miles of commuting and returns 40 mpg every tankful no matter how i drive it.

This car is without doubt the most fun car i have ever driven, you do not need to slow down for corners, parts and maintenance are very cheap and simple to do yourself. My last oil change cost me £35 with genuine parts for example.

Only problem is it is very much a girls car

I believe so.

Also - going by the VRM ending, that car began its life as a BMW GB car.

Surely the only answer to this question is a diesel of some type? I can think of some light weight sports cars with smaller amounts of power but not in the 2k bracket.

Seat Leon/Ibiza TDI or similar.

The 40mpg+ requirement kills nearly car I can think of.

I had a Fabia VRS and I averaged 36 MPG. With gentle driving you could average 40+ but only just (50ish on a steady cruise)... but then diesel is more expensive, and it was dull after a while.

How about an MR2 Mk3. 38 MPG average. Zero practicality though.

Some interesting ideas, I should probably say the reason behind the 40mpg is because I want something dual purpose fun for a weekend drive but also to do my 40 mile a day commute during the week. I love the 20vt but it would kill me financially unfortunately, haven't considered a 328 worth a look. Can't see a mondeo being fun to drive?

I agree unless you're doing lots of miles choosing a diesel can sometimes work out more expensive.

I think the OP should consider all of the other costs associated with owning the car like tax banding, service intervals, insurance etc if cost is an issue.

My situation is the same as yours, the 172 is a good bet.

If I was buying again, I'd certainly look at the MR2 Mk3 though.

I did look at the Coupe myself, it wasn't the thirst that worried me, the running costs did though.

Fabia VRS diesel? If so there must have been something wrong with it! I had a Leon with the same 130tdi engine and I couldn't get it below 40mpg with a mixture of town and motorway driving and a heavy right foot..... and the Leon is a heavier car.

OP... One of the VAG TDI (130 or 150 version) plus a remap (£250) would get you close to your MPG requirements. Or else a 330d as suggested.

To be honest sub 8s + 40mpg doesn't really fit well together, not for < 2k anyway.
