Oooh rust smile

Underneath the front of my mk1 I saw this pipe hanging down, I assume it goes in the hole (pic2) it looks like a breather pipe. My guess is it pipes into the cross member to prevent rust?

I've heard about this carbon canister, what's it for?

Does it ever need changing servicing?

Its just a breather for the fuel tank. Instead of venting to the atmosphere with all the environmental problems that would cause (so they say) it breathes through the charcoal canister and gets sucked into the engine via the intake manifold. Basically it reduces overall emissions.

No, it's a sealed box.

You can remove it completely. Doesn't have any detrimental effect to the cars performance. Also tidies up the engine bay nicely. Here's a link to show you how.

Thanks for that. I'm changing the oil tomorrow so I think I'll remove the canister as well.
