Commuting J27 M62 to Sheffield?
Discussion
Quick question to the Yorkshire folks.
I'm probably coming back to the UK for a while for university.
My family live near Leeds and one of the best courses I've seen is at Sheffield Uni.
I'd potentially be studying/working in/near Sheffield city centre depending on my placements.
I'm wondering if living at home with my parents to save on rent costs is feasible?
Does anyone commute Leeds to Sheffield or vice versa/similar locations?
In my experience the M62 and M1 are pretty rough going, especially in rush hour.
Would it be possible to work long days and commute, or would I be better looking to live in Sheffield instead?

I used to commute daily from M1 Jct 33 - (city centre junction) to M62 Jct 20 (Rochdale)
I'd leave home just after 7 and be at my desk before 9.
Is the uni course full time? Assume you may have days when you don't start til 10 or just the afternoon or whatever?
I'd say its quite easily doable
From memory going the direction you would be the m62 was often stood but the m1 was pretty much OK.
The worst bit might be driving round sheffield and heading up to the uni - which is a right pain around rush hour.

This ^. You shouldn't have any problems at the Leeds end for either morning or evening as the bulk of the traffic will be going the other way. Most Leeds bound stuff will go down the 621 from J27 anyway so the M1 shouldn't have much Leeds traffic between Gildersome and Lofthouse. Depending on what time you're travelling you might get caught up in the Wakefield traffic exiting (morning)/entering (evening) at 41 and 40 but other than that it should be a fairly clear run. The roadworks at Tingley will be slow going westbound in early evening.Just seen this after your questions about which Uni
I have a friend who lives in North Wakefield and works in Sheffield, he usually commutes by train. £11 or so a day for a return ticket, which isn't cheap, but then I imagine petrol + parking could easily cost that. The Leeds-Sheff fast train is 40 mins, slow train is 1hr10.

I have been commuting J26 to J31 for last six weeks. Admittedly I leave Bradford about 6.40 but traffic is light and I reached J31 by 7.25 most days. Returning traffic is light through the 50 zone compared to the nightmare it used to be, only Friday seems to Clog up. However you could come off at Ossett or Tingley and cut across to 27 anyhow

Ben - PM me your email address as
- I went to Uni in Sheffield
- For some of it, I commuted, from Leeds.
Any other questions too. I've seen your other thread. IMO Sheffield is vastly under-rated, especially as your comparing it to 'trendy' student destinations such as Newcastle. I wish I'd ended up working/living there rather than Leeds...

Thanks, Simon.
Have sent you an email.
I agree on the tailbacks, Phil.
They are pretty regular on the M1!
Just checked some figures and from home to uni would be c.72 miles a day.
Over the year that's about 18,000 miles, but it is more like 13k over the duration of the course (37 weeks or so.)
Adding on the time factor and fuel cost + Super Tram monthly park and ride tickets, it would be a fair whack.
I'd be tempted to live in Walkley, ride a mountain bike to uni and save my mileage for Peak District hoons!

Rent would be more, but that extra time to study/work/lesson plan plus less fuel/car costs might make it worthwhile.
