Just after a bit of advice really. MY dog (lab) has recentlty started scooting on his arse. I presume he needs worming or has them. Is there any worm tablets I can order over the internet or is best to take him to the vet? Second prblem is that his eyes are weeping quite badly. Any ideas what could cause this? In general he seems fine, runs around just as much he normally does though he is scratching him self a lot, so much so I found marks on his front armpit area. We moved house recently and he spends most of his time on grass so could be ant bites or fleas. Any advice welcome.

He needs his anal glands emptying.

(A job for the vet I think.)

As above, or he may have worms/fleas.

There is one other option I can think of but I will leave that for now as it's gross.

He he hasn't been m wormed for a while then it is worth doing but it is far more likely to be his anal glands need emptying, as already mentioned. A vet will be able to do this and check that they're not infected (this is less likely but can happen) etc and you could sort wormer out whilst you're there and ck for fleas. Sometimes full glands cause them to scratch all over.

Give them a call today. Whilst not an emergency it is uncomfortable for them, hence the scooting.

And once you've seen it done you'll take him back everytime rather than do it yourself smile

His eyes weeping could be pollen or grass seeds. Pull the lower eye lid down just to check for anything visible.

Itchy skin could be the same and I'm sure the vet will charge you for telling you so smile

Antihistamine tablets will help.

Then of course it might have mites.

The maggots infestation if the dog has been out in the rain/damp.... Dogs kept outside as I am sure you know can be prone to this - fly lands, lays eggs in the fur around that area and they are under the skin..........

Yep definitely gross luckily quite rare.

Usually only seen in rabbits and occ very decrepit animals. I did see it once in a dog with a matted bum and faecal matter stuck to it poor thing (and stupid owner)

True you do, that's one reason why I'm glad I don't work in a large animal practice!

Luckily very uncommon in dogs smile

I think it's uncommon because we tend to have a one to one with our pets.

Our Newfie had his glands drained and I took him once and never again. That became the job of the wife...vet trip not gland draining smile

Anal glands very much top of list, simple cure but can recur,
fleas et al possible but much less likely to cause scooting,
lumps (adenomas) and foreign bodies at bottom of the bumlist!!
runny eyes need a check, can be very simple or more complicated but attend to it now before it gets chronic.

I was going to be a clever-dickie and say that scraping your tea-towel holder across the carpet would bring a tear to the eyes of most, but thought against it.

I'll just agree with the sage advice given by the vet and Bex.

Although, on the rare occasion, Top does this, but he does suffer form occasional constipation which tends to coincide with the scooting
