"The Elizabethan": Deltic to Edinburgh, Tornado back

Is anyone else going on this East Coast Mainline rail charter trip on Wednesday? My Dad's bought us tickets from Peterborough. I haven't been on one of these mainline jollies since I was a kid about 30 years ago and this time we'll be bringing along my kids too! It's going to be a long day for them...
Timings for "The Elizabethan" on Wednesday July 25th,
which is expected to be hauled by D9009 ALYCIDON from King's Cross to Edinburgh,
have now been released. Timings for the 'Deltic' hauled leg are as follows:
King's Cross dep 06.50, Stevenage 07.12, Huntingdon 07.41, Peterborough
08.02/04, Grantham 08.44, Newark 08.54, Retford 09.06, Doncaster 09.29/33, York
10.02/05, Thirsk 10.30, Darlington 10.50, Durham 11.08/13, Newcastle 11.31/35,
Morpeth 11.56, Berwick 12.30, Dunbar 12.54/13.04, Edinburgh 13.40.

I'm not on that trip, but I took the Torbay Express to Kingswear last year, the first time I'd been on a steam express since Mum took me to London in 1967. Left me wishing all trains were steam hauled, so much more fun.
Somewhere between Weymouth or Salisbury to Waterloo I presume, because there wasn't much steam left running into London by 1967

The East coast mainline goes past our estate, the kids went out to see it, but waited for ages this morning and didnt see it. They went back this evening just in time to see tornado hurtle past a few minutes early.29 late at darlo , spitting flames out the exhausts !

Well, that was a long old day. The Deltic suffered an exhaust fire somewhere near Stevenage (not that unusual on these engines, especially the first time they are worked hard after a period pottering around at low speed) and was half an hour late at Peterborough. Managed to make up some time, should have stopped at Durham but was routed through the fast line, so the intending passengers at least got some nice pics as it roared through. I would guess that was deliberate as there was an express due to stop at Durham which was rapidly catching up with us, so the passengers scrambled onto that and we waited for them at Newcastle. Nice fast run up the coast made up some time, Deltic sounding gorgeous on full power, only 10 minutes late into Edinburgh.
Returned from lunch to find total chaos, mob of passengers being kept off the station platform for elf-n-safety reasons. Finally allowed on five minutes before scheduled departure, absolute shambles, angry passengers wanting to photograph Tornado and stewards doing their best to bundle them onto the train. 10 minutes late leaving, Tornado looking and sounding great, actually arrived early at the first water stop, but after that things went a bit pear shaped. Coal and water stop at Tyne Yard took longer than scheduled, which meant we were then put into the loop at Ferryhill for a following express to pass, and we never seemed to make up any time after that. I don't know whether it was an unrealistic schedule or whether Tornado was a bit off her best form.
Return leg stopped at Huntingdon, not Peterborough, so we were shovelled into a coach and driven back up the A1. Finally got home at 1.30 this morning.

There were people out waiting all along the line (though less so in Scotland curiously), right up until darkness fell.
5 hrs 20 mins with Deltic Peterborough > Edinburgh.
2 hrs 10 mins stopover
7 hrs 30 mins with Tornado Edinburgh > Huntingdon (inc. 4 water stops)
That's a long way to travel just to enjoy an al fresco lunchtime bowl of Scottish seafood chowder! Top fun though and the kids were great too (unusually!).
