Just a quick one,

In February of this year I bought an Impreza off my dad that he has owned for a few years now. It has his private plate on it. I've been driving it under that registration for a while now (simply because you wouldn't know it was a private plate to look at as it complies with the conventinal format of the year). He has instructed me not to sell the car without putting it back on it's 'old' registration.

He owns the plate, I am the registered keeper of the car. Can I transfer the car back to it's original registration via the DVLA without his written consent? Or does he need to apply to the DVLA to retain the plate? Ideally I would have the Impreza back on the '05 plate it was first registered on, my dad could have his private plate back to do with as he pleases and I could get rid of the Impreza when it pleased me, and the hassle of getting my insurance certificate updated would be minimal.

Any advice appreciated!

I'm pretty sure he has to pay to retain it (and you and he sign the form) and it will then revert back to its original plate (or to another 05 plate if the DVLA think it should). If you sell the car without the plate being transferred back to your Dad, the new keeper would have control over your Dad's plate. Don't think there's any other way of doing it.

£105 to put YOUR registration on retention. It's not his as the car is in your name.

You put his name as a nominee so he can do what he wants with it as long he does it within a year.

DVLA will give you a replacement registration for your car which in most cases is the original number.

I think his plan is to transfer it to another family member - I just want to know that I can get shot of the Impreza should I wish to do so without him losing his plate. Hopefully the DVLA will just reissue the original registration, I still have the plate in the shed. And the car will 'look' a couple of years younger for it too!

Pretty sure there is a £25 charge if you want to change the nominee name on top of the £105 1yr retention fee.
