according to stats the F10 M5 is only 70kg lighter than a 7 series.

M5 1945kg
750i 2015kg

poor show for an M car.

Same platform isn't it?

Saw a vid recently of a Megane RS 250 chasing the ring taxi and you can really see the weight as it tackles the high speed stuff.

That the F10 I take it? Kind of weird when you look at it like that, 5 series to 7 series! It's still an obsecnely quick car though!

The E60 was 1855kg. Not exactly a featherweight either.

Compare original M5 and the 7 series of its time, they're about the same. Then the next generation M5 and 7, and the generation after that. Your post shows 25 years of history.

Was just about to post exactly the same, having done so once before. 5 and 7 Series usually overlap in weights once you get into the higher spec models.

Plus if you compare flagship with flagship specs, the F02 760Li has a curb (sic) weight of 2,249kg.

Or in other words, ~300kg more than an F10M.

90kg lighter with a V10 rather than a V8? I'd say that was quite significant.

Double clutch gearboxes aren't exactly lightweight either, whereas SMGs are only add around 15kg compared with their equivalent manuals generally (of which there isn't for the E60 admittedly). The new V8 also has a couple of turbos and all the associated pipework and intercooler/s that goes with that, plus the F10 is a bigger car overall. I suspect the suspension is suitably heavy duty too, to deal with the loads of getting on for 600 bhp in an already heavy basic car.

From E28 to F10, weight has increased from 1,550 kg to 1,945kg, around a 25% increase. Power output has near enough doubled. E39 was only 25kg or so lighter than the E60, the biggest jump in weight was from the straight six cars at 1,550-1650kg to the ~10% heavier (and 15% more powerful) E39.

Would love to see that vid if you have a link? I would have expected the M5 to leave the Renault for dead in the long straights, losing out on the twisty bits.

Yeah me too.

Putting things into perspective though (I am a huge M fan) one does really have to question the viability of the current M5.
Its too big, too heavy and too expensive imho. When a 20k Renault can chase one down on a track where the M5 should be at home one really struggles to justify the car costing five times as much.

You're having a laugh right? Have you missed the point of an M5?

No, I don't think so. Are they not supposed to be the flagship super saloon of the BMW range? The supercar slayer?

Fast in a line for sure, but no longer the all rounder it once was back in the days of the e39 M5.

That's my opinion and I am sticking with it smile

yeah, a big super saloon, so why you've compared it to a small hatch back i have no idea. the F10 M5 is no less of a supercar slayer than the E39 M5 was. Both not miles off in a straight line but were never up there in the corners.

Most surprising thing to me is... Isn't the equivalent E63AMG 100-200kg lighter? That's a change around from the historic M car position.

I've not compared it as such, Ive merely commented on a previous comparison made by another - but it is rather a good comparison in some ways. OK type for type the cars are different but they are both the performance pinnacle of each model. One is a cheapy French hatchback and the other is lauded as the super saloon that does everything brilliantly. Well clearly handling is not its redeeming feature as Mr.Newton developed 3 laws explaining motion.

Sure the M5 is a good car, but for me it is no longer the shock package that could be afforded by 'Dave' and outgun the car bought by 'Piers'

It's gotten too big, too expensive and far too fat to be playing its previous role - move over the 1M is in town!
