Age 40 and wanting a bmx?

Tell me not to do it.
Getting the urge to get a bmx for a bit of a hoot and giggle, taking me back to my teenage years, mid-life crisis, whatever you want to call it, but getting the urge.
Now age 40, probably a good 5 stone above what I weighed back in the day, and definitely a lot less fit.
Is it a recipe for disaster and will I break many bones and get to star in many youtube FAIL compilations?
Anyone else done it?

I'm 35 and they have just opened a massive skatepark in Northampton.
I always wanted a skatepark as a teenager and the nearest once was well over an hour away.
I'm seriously considering buying both a BMX and a Skateboard. I can still do a decent bunnyhop and heelflip a skateboard.

Not personally, but a good friend of mine (45 years young) recently showed his son his skills in a skate park on a BMX, and landed up in casualty with 3 broken ribs, a fractured wrist, very swollen crown jewels courteousy of the handlebars, concussion and 3 weeks off work!

op are you talking about building your bmx from back in your youth and having a nice gentle roll about with the odd endo, rock walk and tailwhip or buying one of the modern brakeless bmxs and trying your hand at double back flips? one of these will be fun and put a smile on your face...the other will probably see you flat on it lol
I'm forty two, current BMX fleet is a mid to late school Standard STA, a 2Hip Soul f&f, 2 repro PK Rippers, a 2007 GT, a mid-school GT, an old school Mongoose f&f, and old school Haro Gp1 race f&f plus other stuff i forget.
Join up on Radbmx, it's full of old gits like us reliving our youth! They even do nights at skateparks so all us oldies can ride without fear of being laughed at by youngsters with their arses hanging out their jeans.

I have a collection of old and new school and have been doing park stuff for the last 2 years. Best thing i ever did

Wow, seems I'm not alone, thanks for the various opinions and for the other thread.
To clarify a couple of points
1. No I'll not being doing any 'deathroll 360 jumps down 50 foot stairs while spinning the front wheel and not holding on jumps of doom' stuff, merely mucking around on large kerbs, small walls, makeshift jumps on nearby dirt tracks and streams, type of stuff.
2. I'm seriously impressed by some of the hardware owned by some, sadly mine is more likely to be a £100 ebay job, or at best £150 halfords job. I have far more pressing things to spend disposable income on (house, wife, daughter, Lotus)
Great responses so far, and the other thread is making me want even more.

Do yourself a favour and stay well away from Halfords. The bmx's in there are beyond bobbins!
Your best bet is a second hand complete off the bay which you can upgrade as/when you see fit.
I ride my mongoose decade, complete with 25 year old mags, down the skate park all the time with no issues. As a general rule of thumb, the names you may remember from back in the day are not great now. Mongoose, Haro, Diamondback etc are all middle of the road for all but their very high end models.
Wethepeople, Subrosa, Sunday, Khe and Eastern are all decent places to start with new school stuff

Took my daughter (11) to Transgression Park on Saturday morning for a lesson on her new stunt scooter.
In the shop, up on the wall, they have an old Falcon Pro Freestyler that some guy walked in with one day and donated to them - the exact same bike I had as a kid, although mine was white & orange, this one is white & green.
I so want to buy it from them...
The guy in the store said it weighs a ton compared to the modern stuff.
I used to thin it was really lightweight, but then my previous steed was a Raleigh Grifter

This. Go for it!!!I'm past my prime and contemplating entering my first competitive downhill mtb event. Only one thing is certain - putting it off until next year won't make it any easier.
