Alright,

Yes I know, another what car, but duty calls. My mum is quite into hot hatches, really likes the golf gti but i want to see what other options there are. Not a large set of requirements really:

-Hot hatch
-5 doors a must
-6-7k
-not too high on running costs

Any ideas, so far i could only think of the BMW 130i but i would imagine running costs to be rather on
the high side, or are they alright?

Cheers

I would've said Mazda 3 MPS but running costs (well, tax) is a fair amount.

Golf R32 is a good option, or a focus st maybe?

I think you're on the right track with either a Golf Gti or a 130i.

The Golf is a good car; a bit more spacious than the 1 series, a touch more economical, fun and foolproof to drive.

The 130i is a quite a bit faster, much more fun and feels more special, largely thanks to the engine. Mine has averaged 31mpg although quite a lot of that is motorway / dual carriageway. Servicing is reasonable (probably little different to a Golf) and they have a very good reputation for reliability. Tyres are expensive, particularly if you stick with the run flats (around £800 a set for Bridgestone or Michelin).

I'm sure you could pick up a Honda Integra DC5 for £7k
I'm yet to see a 5 door Integra type r.

Very limited in what you can get with 5 door and hatchback tbh. Anything hot from the VAG group are the obvious choices. All type r available in the price range are 3 doors.

Cousin just got a Mazda 3 Mps and loves it. But for the high running costs id probably opt for a blobeye impreza wrx.

Don't think 130i running costs are that bad.

Renaultsport Megane come in 5-door flavour. Properly sorted hot hatch by all accounts. Perhaps a tad hardcore for your old dear? The Beemer certainly makes a strong case for itself. I quite fancy both at the moment as a practical performance car.

Maybe a bit too discreet and a bit of an unknown quantity to most people but how about one of these?

Fuel consumption won't be great but otherwise basically an R32 Golf underneath with plenty of kit and well built, not bad value either.

Well that's good, I was just browsing the autotrader and found that the 130i's were incredibly cheap for what is essientially a 30k car a few years ago, just assumed it was something to do with enormous running costs, is there a valid reason why they are so cheap?

IMO, there are probably a few reasons.

Running costs - This is more to do with perceived running costs. Its a 3.0 petrol so its bound to cost a fortune right? You suspected they were expensive to run, so does everyone else. So, despite the fact they're very reliable and are not too costly to run at all, the market for them is quite small.

Diesel - Everyone seems to want a diesel nowadays and BMW make some very good diesel motors. Most people have no idea or couldn't care less about engines (as long as its reasonably economical) and so will just buy the 120d, if they want a 1 series.

Not the obvious choice - Those that are looking for a fast hatch often overlook the 130i (big mistake IMO)

Looks - Well, I think the M sport with 208M alloys looks great. Others can't get past the looks.

Still surprised they're down to sub £7k frown

When I say that bad I mean for the performance/type of car wink There is at least no ///M tax. Ditch the run flats and tyres aren't too silly. Friend of mine who has one reports reasonable fuel economy and running costs.

As for used values. Big petrol engines are out of favour these days? Styling not universally loved? Dunno!

I'v never seen one of these on the road, but seem very good value if you can get used to the looks!

Golf GTi is definitely the car for those requirements
