Spyder - help and info please for a prospective new Owner
Discussion
Getting very close to pulling the trigger on one of these, quite a well specced one and I know that may go against the grain but it's what floats my boat!! Coming from a Z4MC with a lot of toys and like buttons to press sometimes.
Any of you guys going to put me off?? It will be a daily driver bar the wife's diesel golf for the odd reality check. I only cover 3-4k a year and drove the Z4 in rain, sleet, snow and sunshine. It been great fun for 4.5 years after a E46 M3 for 3.5 yrs prior to that. Looking for a change and have £40k to spend, people keep saying 997 gen2 but I like something a little different. I'm not a yellow or light blue colour person but have enjoyed the uniqueness of the Z4MC.
Any advice of what to check out, will more than likely be coming from OPC but there is one at Bramley cars with only 101miles on the clock I have viewed but not driven. Not driven a Porsche ever thinking about it but once the Spyder was started albeit in a garage it just sounded awesome and only hope it drives as well.
Any suggestions on how much a dealer might move on price or what to try and barter into the deal would be appreciated -LOTS!! Never dealt with Porsche or any other main dealer particularly successfully in the past. Tend to purchase from small indi's bar the wife's golf which came from DrivetheDeal - such an easy process and over 20% off.
Please offer as much advice as you can spare the time to offer but please don't let it become a spec debate or man/pdk fight. I'm looking at basically PDK with paddles, chrono, pse and buckets the rest is just nice trimming.
May start a new thread with this repeated but wanted to start here where a few are actively watching I guess.
Thanks

Without wishing to be curt, why don't you teast drive one and see what you think. You are obviously going to be comparing it with your Z4 and most people on here wont be in a position to do that. It's your £40k afterall.
My advice, go for a Cayman R if you want a better shot at all year functionlity.

Test drive arranged for Friday, seeking advice in the run up as likely to do a deal shortly after and wanted to go prepared. Is it likely I will not enjoy the drive or gearbox??My advice, go for a Cayman R if you want a better shot at all year functionlity.

It will be better than the z4m in almost every way except for the engine noise (I had 2 z4mcs) it'll no doubt come down to if you can live with the roof, I fell in love with one but after reading as must as I could about the car the roof was a big issue for me like u I intended to use it as a daily driver but for 15k a year..
I've since had a gen 2 s boxster over a weekend and decided I want one but with PDK and PASM as I felt the standard suspension was too firm on 19s, I understand the spyder suspension is even harder... For the weekend fine, but not on a monday morning commute, it's the main reason I got rid of the z4mc - lol I'm obviously getting old, just need to sell the 911 first though

Feel free to ping me a PM, I'm currently trying to work out a deal with a couple of OPC's for a boxster spyder & I'm part exchanging my Z4M coupe-kind of pool or resources
As for the drive-you'll love it. I did the launch day & it's a thoroughly sorted car in the handling department.
Love my Z but it's a much more "TVR" experience than a boxster ever will be, not bad but very different. Has to be said I really will miss the things like the multifunction stealing wheel & all the creature comforts though....

Your interpretation of the drive will be purely personal. I expect you will find that any 987 (boxster / cayman) has a more involving and reactive drive. I used to have an e46 M3 and found it very dull handling wise. Not sure how that compares with a Z4?
Z4 is quite a feisty/angry little thing. Think EVO says you have to be prepared to get stuck in!!LaurasOtherHalf said:

Spyder is a lovely car! I think you'd love it. Just negotiate hard on price and be prepared to walk away. Reasonable discount should be achievable!
You'd think eh? Not miChat doing so far....
Interesting that there are POTENTIALLY others like me that swapped a z4mc for a spyder/cr. I owned a
low mileage z4mc for 6 months and sold it once I test drove the cr. coming from a z3mc, I find the z4mc a complete let down in terms of ride, handling and quality. what on paper seems like a great car turns out to be a great engine in a mediocre package. People bang on about the entire drive train and how only P-cars seem to be able to string together and make everything flow. I don't think that's true, the toyota Gt86 does a good job of it too. The Z4m does not IMO.
The test drive will make you forget the z4m in an instant.
oh 1 last thing, almost everyone has an opinion. Not many will have owned all 4 ( and test drove the toyota)......

What's miChat? Might have been easier when it was pouring with rain!
f
k knows? Apple obviously thought it made more sense than "nothing doing"Oh & it is still pouring with rain up here!
I bought a Spyder in May. I came from an Elise 111R (quite a different beast to a Z4!). I absolutely love it - mainly because it's perfectly balanced, different, limited in numbers, the lightest car Porsche make (made recently) and offered the perfect next step for me. Plus....THOSE HUMPS...!!
One thing I would say is that the roof can get on your nerves a bit. And that's coming from someone who had a manual roof on his previous car! At around 80mph+ you get a fair amount of wind noise, and you will get one or two spots of rain hit your face on the motorway. It takes a tiny bit longer than the Elise roof. You need to be pretty sure it's staying dry, and then pull over for a couple of minutes. But that said it just looks so epic from behind with the roof down! I had a 981 Boxster S as a courtesy car for a week - it was so nice to hit the button and let it do it's thing between showers, and yes the whole car is a step forward versus the old one, but by the end of the week I wanted my Spyder back. It's just so much more alive.
I toyed with a Cayman R, but if you read the reviews, the Spyder is supposed to be dynamically superior. There are some good vids on youtube. Plus you can take the roof off, it is unique and doesn't have that stupid little wing.
I bought it from a Porsche dealer, and because they really needed to get it off their stock list as it was month end, they lopped off £1250 from the sticker price. I couldn't argue with that. I could get a better deal elsewehere on my px, so that didn't factor in the deal. The service was exceptional. They sent it off to get a tiny scratch done, and got me on their Silverstone day, so I was pretty happy.
At the end of the day, they are car dealers who need to shift stock. My advice would be, if you want the best chance of a discount, wait until month end. However, we are talking about a Spyder here, so if you see one with the right spec, it's probably better just to go for it!
In my opinion, PSE is essential!!
Happy to answer any questions.
Good luck.

So, you going for the red one down here then?
Unless I get a very unexpected phone call this week unlikely, me & the other half are heading out to Belgium & Germany (
) this time next week in the Mcoupe so the timing just isn't there anymore. I made them what I thought to be a good offer at the end of last week but it's just getting too close to our holiday to now.I might call in on the way down to look over the car however, just to test the waters so to speak.
It's a nice car, almost perfect spec for me (missing nav is a disappointment) & in my favourite colour but we'll wait & see.
I'm half tempted to sell the coupe privately on our return & wait for a winter bargain....
Thanks for the comments as well Hammer
