due to getting made redundant frown and getting a new job smile I'm on the lookout for a new car. I want a nice motorway car as i'll be doing 18k a year... I'll get 45PPM

Needs 40+mpg
7.5k budget
reliable
A good mile muncher.
Nice stereo
Nothing too brash.

I really fancy a Lexus is220d, the bells and whistles one with every option.

Any other ideas?

I'd prefer not to have the cream leather, also i'm not sure if its the news paper for floormats but there's something about that I don't like!

Not overly, have you not been in a modern lexus? i'll have a look around though to see what others I can find that look a bit better.

Um... no. Superb car for the motorway waft but Ive moved jobs closer to home now and the 530i is more 'me'. A little trade off in refinement vs oodles more poke, handling, estate practicality... etc.

Jason - only the IS200 I admit. Does the newer car significantly move the game on then?

Any preference on fuel? Transmission type or age? If it was out of my own pocket, then a good late S-Class diesel with the right history would be my foil to the 7'ers already suggested.

A red MX-5 fitted with air suspension and Conolly leather? They corner nicely!

Yes it does really, its a later generation and has the same fit/finish as the other lexus models.

erm will you get 45ppm for the entire 18,000 miles? Or only part of?

Also I don't really understand this... most people have to pay for their own fuel. If you are having it paid for, why on earth would you want a 40+mpg vehicle? Surely now is the time to run something a little barmy with little to no personal outlay for fuel?

That said if you are not needing huge performance I think I'd be looking at an x358 Jaguar XJ6 or maybe even a 2.7 V6 HDI Citroen C6 for this budget. Suspect you'd struggle to find a much more comfy place to sit for long miles.

45ppm for the first 10k then 25ppm after. I want 40mpg as i've got about 4000miles to pay for myself per year. Adding in servcing/insurance/tyres etc etc. I don't want to get suckered into running a 30mpg car. If I can end up a few quid up to cover depreciation etc then all the better. The idea being that in 4 years time i'll have enough 'extra' left over from the milage to buy another 7.5k car with the value of this car too.

Oh boohoo my heart bleeds for you. A whole 4000 miles.... hell I have to pay for triple that a year and they aren't even commuting miles.

You want 40Mpg as a must despite getting most paid for? I guess it's still money in the pocket but I'm now doing 300+ miles per week and I pay that all myself. 45ppm should pay your fuel and servicing!

Now, don't be a cheap skate and get yourself a BMW E65 745i hehe

Yep and so do I at the minute, 15000miles out of my own skyrocket! Put it another way, I don't want to have to pay for the costs associated with the work milage. I'm not tight, just not stupid. I've enough petrol things in my garage that'll do <20mpg smile
