Is anyone elses roads melting at the moment?

Down on the sunny Isle of Wight they are! The local council paid some contractors to do a half arsed job of surface treating the roads which involved spraying hot tar on them and covering them in chippings. It was st when it was done because it dashed everyones paintwork, it was st when it settled because the roar from the tyres was so loud, and now it's st because it's melting!

I honestly do not know what they were thinking, I know the intent was to prevent cracking and potholing but they've gone over perfectly decent roads, some recently resurfaced, and ruined them!

I know IOWC is probably up there in the top three most useless councils in the UK, but has anyone elses local councils pulled this stunt?

Oxfordshire CC has been doing this recently as well and I remember Surrey CC have done the same in the past so it seems like a fairly common way to resurface back roads.

It is still naff however.

up here in shetland the council do this the whole time but it never gets hot enough for it to melt must be an absolute pain with bits of tar/chippings stuck everywhere

I know the treatment is common, but I'm wondering if our delightful council bean counters have chosen to double skimp by getting the lowest bidder to throw any old st he could find down, leading to it all melting the first time the sun comes out...

Roads are closing, the undersides of cars are getting plastered in tar and grit!

This happened a few months ago and the contractor promised they would fix it at their expense. Nothing was done bar putting some 'Reduce Speed' signs on affected roads, and the resulting surface is like ice once it rains as it's gone mirror smooth.

Utter fking incompetence.

Some of the major roads bordering the edge of Newcastle and Northumberland were recently done in this way, a cheap and nasty money saving effort. I particularly hated them on NSL roads because whilst most people in nice cars would travel along it slowly when the grit had just been laid, there would inevitably be someone in a taxi or a stbox coming the other way at 60mph showering everyone on their offside with chippings.

Surrey CC went mad about a month or 2 ago going over loads of roads with the tar and surface dressing chippings technique. 2 weeks worth of pinging stones but thankfully most of the roads are fine to drive on now - if only they'd actually get the contractors in to repaint the lines would be nice

Local Tesco have just resurfaced the main car park - lovely smell of fresh bitumen at the moment (yes i would appear to be a freak )
