Given the iPod cable in the 997.2 can be removed easily, do we know/think that Porsche will release a new cable for the iPhone 5 when it is released later this year?

I should think Porsche R&D are busy working on this lead as I write hehe

Bear in mind it took years to get an iPhone lead in a 911/Cockster etc. - the iPhone 5 lead may be some time!

I doubt they will bother. When Apple change the connector on the new iPhone, adaptors to convert new to old will become the number one produect for just about every accessory maker out there.

Surely, the Porsche lead will just be compatible with one of those adaptors?

Possibly so, but the armrest cubby is pretty cramped already without sticking an adaptor on the end of the existing cable, so a replacement cable would be the cleanest option. Given it's only 5cm long and not very complicated, you'd think it wouldn't be too much effort to release a new one...

You know what Porsche are like with in-car tech. You'll be buying your 992 car by the time they release the right cable biggrin

Should be easy - the existing cable has an iphone 1/2/3/4 connector on one end, then a USB plus headphone at the other end.

Someone will make the same but with an iphone 5 connector. It doesn't have to be Porsche because it's generic USB.

That's not quite right.

The interface has three connections - a 3.5mm jack, a USB port and a port for the iPod, which looks a bit like a PS/2 connector. So it needs to have that plug plus USB on one end, and the new iPhone jack on the other. Whether that connector is an industry standard or Porsche proprietary one, I've not checked.

iPhone 5 uses the new micro connector and as pointed out already adapters will be available too. Unfortunately Porsche cannot keep up with technology moving at a fast pace, though neither can the car audio industry who always appear to be at least 5 years behind.

OK, but as pointed out already, there's barely room for the standard connector and an iPhone in the cubby, so if you put an adaptor in the middle as well, I'm not sure it's going to fit.

You could always house an adaptor where the clutch pedal should be?

I've found those round shiny things with a hole in the middle do a great job smile
