Hi

Getting a tapping sound under bonnet from near side under load - manifold gasket?

Does not do it stationery even when revving

Had it on ramp today an no obvious exhaust or manifold blow??

Any ideas where to look next ?????

See if you can get a couple of turns on the rear manifold bolt on that side.

It's common for that to work itself loose. It's also the hardest one to get to wink

If it gets worse and it is a little blow then you'll start to hear a flutter in the car as if it's coming from the passenger footwell.

Final step is you become convinced you're driving a tractor. smile

On my Griff it was the little fecker at the back underneath. The one that I needed to file down a ring spanner to get to.

It used to work loose every few thousand miles.

Hope it is as although it's a bugger it's a simple enough fix.

does it sound like pinking (detonating) under load ? Mine was doing this and it was found that one of the exhaust lobes on the cam had worn almost round and was causing the engine to back fire thru the inlet valve making a metal on metal sound.
Car still ran but lacked power and I didn't drive it like this for long.
hopefully not your problem... but same symptoms.
Cheers
Geoff.

edited to add , it was like this when I brought it....should have walked away.

How dd you diagnose this?? any easy way other than stripping down?

Going to check lower manifold bolts tonight hopefully that cures it

I took into Mat Smiths at downham market to have it ( and some other stuff ) checked over as I thought it might just be pinking if the timing was out or distributor issue etc. He quickly came up with the possible cam reasoning and I gave him the go ahead to check it out , as soon as he could see the cam it was obviously badly worn on one exhaust lobe , most other lobes were reasonable but it had to be changed. The car has not run yet as I only got some gaskets to him this morning to finish putting it back together. will update as soon as I know the outcome. I have just taken a short video of my old cam to put on youtube so you can see it. link to follow.
Cheers
Geoff.

edit to add video link....
