Decent Salt 'n Pepper thingyjig?

Hi folks

Today, yet another Pepper grinder broke

I've spent no money, i've spent a bit of money and i've spent alot (to me) of money on these things. I've had twisty ones, push ones but i've yet to find a decent reliable set of grinders.

Any advice or links would be great

Rather not spend a huge amount, is £30 a decent enough amount?

I have a le creuset set somewhere. The pepper grinder is impeccable, I tend to use flaked salt on food but no doubt the salt grinder is just as good. Ceramic grinder plates etc etc

I have a Bodum one - no real complaints other than the rubber "band" on the part you twist getting loose, my in-laws have the same one and it's happened on theirs too, nothing a light grip can't solve when grinding. Capacity isn't huge so if you use a lot of salt or pepper you might fill it quite often.

I have the twisty things. Nothing wrong with them as long as the salt grinders are new. The salt ones wear out as they are plastic so trying a set with ceramic grinders at the mo.

But. I have one of those spice/chocolate powder sprinkle thngy and make up my own mix of ground pepper, ground dried chilli, ground coriander, ground cumin etc in a a mortice and pestle or spice grinder. Get the balance right and it makes a great condiment.

It looks as though my Bodum one has been updated to remove the issue with the slippy handle, it's also half the price and still has ceramic gears:

I've had a T&G Crushgrind for nearly a decade and it's brilliant.

I over tightened the ceramic once by accident, and buggered it up by all accounts. I contacted them and they put a replacement ceramic in the next post which fixed it, but if that hadn't worked, then they assured me they would replace the lot.

Good quality, and it works, every time.

Only buy one of these if you don't like pepper, we have the old style one (big pic above) and the pepper grinding is pathetically slow, the feed into the grinder isn't big enough so you don't get much coming out.

I'm just going to replace them with some peugeot wooden grinders, they're supposed to be very good.

Interesting, I saw a nice set in TK Maxx a few weeks ago. I'd all but given up on grinders but I may have a punt at these.

I've been using maldon salt flakes and a pestle and mortar for whole peppercorns. Coarse, medium or fine grind to your satisfaction!

Strange, we have an old Peugeot pepper grinder, must be 25 years old - still works fine.

Mine seems fine in that respect, it chucks out some lovely chunks of pepper in decent quantities, have you adjusted the wingnut on the bottom at all to open it up slightly?

Quite happy with my tradtitional style wooden Peugeot mill. Does the job well, and the twist collar for varying the grind size is as simple as you need. Woudl happily recommend them.

Had a Peugeot mill for a long time, but the CrushGrind knocks the socks off it!
