Would it be possible to buy and insure an early 90's land rover defender for someone under 20? (but will turn 20 next month) Had my first experience of them this weekend and loved it! Any information would be much appreciated.

Cheers

I don't see why not. Although things have changed insurance wise over the years. They used to be very cheap to insure. I had my 1st D90 at 17.

Best bet would be to shop around, joining an owners club might be a worthwhile thing too if you get a discount. And online comparison sites might not offer the best deals.

The NFU used to do very good insurance for Land Rovers, but I'm not sure it's still the case.

Check as many insurance companies as you can and see what they say.

As mentioned above, they used to be very cheap for young drivers - certainly were when I was 17 three years ago.

It may or may not be the case, the only way you can find out is by getting some quotes.

The NFU are not cheap any longer. I'd been with them for years, the last couple of years the premiums have nearly doubled, so I binned them for Adrian Flux. Very annoying, as I liked dealing with a proper office. Hopefully they will get back on track. That was for a 300tdi defender as well, so you'd have thought it would be their bread and butter vehicle.

And my son drove a series 2 at 17, and an old defender slightly later, with no major problems.

I had a look around recently (20, male, 3 years NCB, West london) and while I didn't look hard, recentish ones were coming up around £2000.

When I was 20 I could insure a defender for around £600. My disco cost £1200 :/

If the land rover is over 15 years old you can get classic insurance, i pay £100 a year for a V8 90 unfortunately i am not 20 years old,i think some companies you have to be 21,the other down side of classic insurance is you do not gain any ncb. it may well be worth a look though to give you a comparison.
