Now I have this mate-well more of a bloke I know and he has an MX5.
Not a problem there so far,its up to him what car he drives----but he will not stop going on and on about it.
At the golf club (must leave his clubs there full time) pub etc etc.
Married guy trying to get it on with the girls-- you get my drift.
Anyway he has really started pushing the point wanting to go up against my Chim 4.0,to which I say
So I think a bet is on-- and I can't work this one out.
Chim 0-60 say 5s
Hairdresser O-60 say 9s plus next week
So by the time I hit 60 on my way to mach1 how far back will he be in distance--or even better when he's on 60 how far ahead will I be?
I can beat him can't I ? and you can't beat these

As an MX5 owner (supercharged, Koni lowered, light flywheel, wide bore SS exhaust, et cetera) I'd never be as daft as to challenge a Chimaera owner to a dual, Micharea, but I know I can beat any TVR on the twisties. Done it, up the Pyranees. SL's too. The MX5 is far more chuckable on the bends, even uphill, and with a supercharger has that extra over-taking boost. It lifts the modest 1.6 engine to 190 bhp in what is a very light car. But I'd much prefer to tail behind a TVR just to listen to its rumble. By the way, they make Monster Miatas (MX5s) over here with V8s crammed under the bonnet. Awesome - and no "hairdresser's" car, I assure you. So don't sneer! ![]()

Over here, V8 MX5s boast 0 to 60 in 5 seconds or less. Never tested the claim. My supercharged version with tons of torque from the get-go hits it in 6.3, but runs out of puff at 90, whereupon TVRs and Porsches glide off into the sunset ahead of me. There's a new official Mazda Turbo MX5 out here, but I notice they don't quote 0 to 60 figures. I'd guess around the 7 second mark. Turbos and superchargers are best used for over-taking. Nothing beats BHP. Now how can i get some nitrous-oxide into the engine ...

To make this easy to explain, and use as ammo, you need to make some assumptions.
1. The rate of acceleration is constant - it isn't but who cares it's late.
2. 60 mph is approx 100kph, which is 27.8 metres per second.
So first we calculate Acceleration, which from a initial velocity of zero is easy.
Acceleration = Final Velocity/Time
So:
TVR Acceleration = 27.8/5 = 5.56
MX5 Acceleration = 27.8/9 = 3.08
Distance Travelled from an initial velocity of zero is also relatively easy.
Distance Travelled = 0.5 x Acceleration x Time(squared)
So by the time you are doing 60mph
TVR Distance Travelled = 0.5x5.56x25 = 69.5 metres
MX5 Distance Travelled = 0.5x3.08x25 = 38.5 metres
i.e. after 5 seconds he will be 31 metres behind.
By time the MX5 is doing 60 mph
TVR Distance Travelled = 0.5x5.56x81 = 225.2 metres
MX5 Distance Travelled = 0.5x3.08x81 = 124.7 metres
i.e. after 9 seconds he will be 100.5 metres behind.
Like I said, Acceleration is NOT constant, but this should be enough to shut him up.

Just so you know - if acceleration were constant, then by the time the MX5 had hit 60mph, you'd be doing 108mph.
Start the arguement after a few beers, leave terminal velocity out of it, and hope he's not a physics expert.

ps - I'd stick to the straighter stuff if I were you, more chance to use the TVR power without getting it wrong on the exit, and you'll pull away far more easily. MX5's are nimble little b

I'd definately find out discretely if the mx5 is standard or modified before you do it.
If its a stock car you've no problems on the issue of a drag race.
If he's got forced induction then that could be dangerous for your ego/ street cred if you're not prepared for the difference in the mazda performance.
I know a few guys in the UK who are producing 250-280bhp with FM2 turbos & user programmable ecu's.
The latest performance kit is the Eaton M62 supercharger, half as big again as the more common M45 blower, again there are a handful in the uk and should be producing around 285bhp. In a car that weighs 1020-1060kg depending on year & model.
Bob Carter is the only car I know of in the UK with a V8 in a mx5, at Nobles dyno last year he was running very rich & was down on power (IIRC <200) but a very fat & flat torque curve.
Don't forget the mx5 was voted the best handling car last year by one of the car mags (I forget which one).
