It works though - sit someone down in a room, talk about what's wrong with them for an hour, have an attentive listener who keeps asking questions, do all that empathy stuff then at the end of the hour give them a bottle of something and the patient will feel loads better.

Obviously the bottle of something is just water and won't have any physiological change, but having someone working with you to help you through problems will make lots of ailments (especially the ones that just get better anyway) go away.

It's been found it is roughly as effective as any other placebo treatment.

And is detrimental to the nation's health as they choose this nonsense over genuine remedies..

Sometimes people get confused and say they are using homeopathy when they actually have a herbal remedy - like calamine lotion or arnica.

I have to say I think it's rubbish/possiby the placebo effect but if it is rubbish why do we have a hospital dedicated to it ?

http://www.uclh.nhs.uk/OurServices/OurHospitals/RL...

Surely that hospital isn't funded unless it has some proven benefit in this day and age ?!?!

What do we call homeopathic (or alternative) medicine that works? Medicine.

Edit: I dislike it when people say "it's just the placebo effect". There's no "just" about it, the placebo effect is known to be powerful and effective, so to have a dismissive attitude to it is silly (not directed at posters here, but at the world in general).

This. It is very easy to get skeptical about something outside of the norm, especially when to all intents and purposes it seems like a crock of crap.

Is 'conventional' medicine not simply a very developed form of 'homeopathy' anyway? I seem to recall that Asprin is made from a bark of a certain tree and other common medicines also utilise many other natural products, refined.

The difference is that the conventional medicine actually contains Asprin or whatever. Homeopathic remedies don't contain the active ingredient.

people are confusing Homeopathy with alternative/traditional/herbal treatments.

Homeopathy is when you highly dilute something to the point that you're only left with the thing you diluted it with. It's more bks then the other alternative stuff.

The last couple of years the 10:23 group has organised a protest day against it. People get together and take massive overdoses of Homeopathic remedies to show that it doesn't do anything ... the people in Germany who joined in where threatened with being prosecuted for running an unauthorised medical experiement... yeah, for drinking what as by then just pure water laugh

homeopathic veterinary is the perfect clinical trial.

the animal won't know or care about what is being administered and therefore the placebo effect is completely eliminated.

if the vet is getting great success rates then the 'medicine' is working.

however, diagnosis can be difficult in animals as they cannot give an adequate history nor say if they are feeling better but a particularly neurotic kaftan wearing owner may 'notice' that their pet is looking better after having taken the homeopathic water.

the complete guide to homeopathy (funny)

the placebo effect has been shown to work just as well with pets as with people, so this would be a "prefect" trail

Some people are getting very confused here.. All alternative medicines are not homeopathic..

As explained above, homeopathic medicines are water.. That Is it.

It's absolute nonsensical pseudo science that talks about "water memory"
